English in the workplace

The Handbook of English for Specific Purposes: Second Edition
Journal · pp. 285-304
Abstract

For English for Specific Purposes (ESP) practitioners, the workplace is a contextual setting with its own particular set of English language requirements. In this chapter, I outline the burgeoning sociolinguistic area of workplace communication which offers empirically based findings about the communicative practices that characterize workplace talk. I highlight those areas ripe for application, as well as trends that are changing our conceptualization of what English in the workplace "looks like" in today's organizations, and what it will look like in the future. The overview illuminates current issues in the research agenda as well as changing societal factors which are impacting the use and place of English at work. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
