The initial vocational training of young people in the German steel industry continues to play a very important role. Despite the difficult economic environment the apprenticeship rate has gone up markedly from 4.4% five years ago to 4.9% this year. In comparison with other industries, the steel sector offers a very wide range of different professions. 35 different recognized apprenticeships are provided, including new ones, such as mechatronics engineering, IT systems engineering and IT specialists as well as a series of interesting training and study cooperations. An apprenticeship levy, which is currently being discussed by politicians, would be expensive and counterproductive and would generate more red tape than new apprenticeships.
