This paper provides a review on the development of hospitality management educational programmes in relation to their capability to cultivate key core competencies for the hospitality industry. Following an extensive literature review on the views of educators, students and hospitality industry professionals, the implications of core competencies development is discussed considering the perspective of effective hospitality management. This study reveals that there is a need for a paradigm shift in hospitality education to catch up with the rapidly changing world of tourism and properly support hospitality management in their endeavor to develop the right core competencies for the hospitality industry. A new approach is demanded to educate hospitality management students that incorporates current and future trends in the social and technological environment and cultivates the core competencies that are needed by the industry. Moreover, experiential approaches should be used to help students to develop core competencies and skills on embracing a digitally interconnected world. © the authors, 2021. All Rights Reserved.
