Abstract

Introduction. The analysis of different approaches to solving the problem of improving the quality of engineering education made it possible for the authors to identify a significant approach, based on the ideas of the Worldwide CDIO Initiative and the ideas of sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to substantiate the possibility of improving the quality of engineering education in accordance with international requirements and modern challenges using the mentioned approaches in their integrative unity, providing value-semantic and professional-technological components in training future engineers. Materials and methods. The research materials were: Federal State Educational Standards of Higher Education in Metallurgy and its curriculum, CDIO Standards and Syllabus 1.0, normative legal documents related to sustainable development and education for sustainable development, monographs, and scientific papers. The study was based on the methodology of systemic, competency-based, activity approaches. Results. The necessity and feasibility of integrating the ideas of sustainable development and the Worldwide CDIO Initiative in the context of improving the quality of engineering education are substantiated. The paper presents the efficient educational technologies and activities based on the integration in the process of implementation of Metallurgy programme at the Siberian Federal University. Discussion and Conclusions. A comparative analysis of the ideas and Standards of the Worldwide CDIO Initiative and the concept of education for sustainable development proved their semantic and integrative unity as well as the possibility of enriching the vocational training of the future engineer. © 2020 LLC Ecological Help.
