Book chapter 2020

On Belonging, Becoming and Being

Professional and Practice-based Learning
Journal · Vol. 27 · pp. 1-22
Abstract

In this first chapter, the conceptualisation of learning a trade as a process of becoming a tradesperson and for the attainment of identity of a tradesperson is introduced, rationalised and explained. These concepts inform the overall approaches proposed and applied through this volume. Learning, as a process of becoming and being, is proposed to be well-aligned to the key objectives of vocational education and training (VET) which are to provision individuals with the skills, knowledge and dispositions to enter into and practice in occupations (Billett, 2014). © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.
