Background: Apprentices are the labor force of the future and responsible for the long-term economic success of a company. Health status and ability to work are of particular importance in this context. The need for target group-specific prevention programs for commercial apprentices has not been recorded so far and will be identified in the survey. Objectives: The subjective health status as well as the ability to work of the commercial apprentices should be pointed out. The results can be used as a starting point for target group-specific prevention programs within the framework of commercial education. Methods: In all, 565 apprentices undergoing commercial training in the dual system participated in the survey. The data on lifestyle factors (health status, ability to work, health literacy, physical activity and smoking) were collected at three different vocational colleges in Cologne. Results: Commercial apprentices represent a heterogeneous target group. More than half of respondents have reduced or impaired well-being, smoke and have a moderate to critical ability to work. A total of 74.3% achieves the minimum World Health Organization requirements for overall activity. Conclusion: The results show that there is a need for health-promoting programs for commercial apprentices. Corresponding measures should be implemented and coordinated in both the training company and the vocational school. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Deutschland, ein Teil von Springer Nature.
