Although the usage of case studies is very common in teaching worldwide, there has been inadequate discussion concerning the quality with respect to teaching and learning . The focus of this article is to assess the pedagogic aspect of business case studies in academic teaching. On the basis of a specific tool to detect the pedagogical quality of business cases and related teaching notes, a total of nine award-winning case studies delivered by a well-known publishing house were analysed. The findings indicate that the pedagogical quality varies from case to case. There are deficits concerning the focus on problem orientation and the complexity of the cases. Further weaknesses have been identified in some case studies regarding the learner’s autonomy and prior knowledge, while with respect to real-life orientation, most case studies have a high level of accordance with a pedagogic optimum. © 2023 by the authors.

While numerous studies have focused on the learning transfer of in-company training in past decades, relatively few have explored the transfer of knowledge from university studies to the workplace, particularly in the context of nursing. Moreover, profile variables tend to be used to describe the sample but not to explore its effect on learning transfer. This article explores the effect of previous work experience—in health—on the learning transfer factors model among new nurses during their first year of work. A total of 196 nurses with six months to one year of experience, representing various healthcare services in Catalonia, participated in this study. We administered a 53-item questionnaire based on the Model to Evaluate Transfer in Nursing Professionals. Using cluster analysis, we identified three distinct groups: Cluster #1 (Academically unprepared with low self-competence), Cluster #2 (Academically unprepared but moderately self-competent), and Cluster #3 (Highly academically prepared and highly self-competent). Nurses in Cluster #3 exhibited a higher degree of learning transfer. However, we also found an interaction between previous work experience and learning transfer. To analyse these interactions, we applied non-traditional analysis techniques, including network analysis, which revealed significant differences between the models with and without work experience. This study highlights the importance of exploring transfer beyond the traditional in-company training context and identifies previous work experiences as one of the key variables that needs to be carefully examined. © 2023 by the authors.

Craft education and training are important for preserving cultural heritage and fostering artisanal skills. However, the pedagogical challenges in this domain are numerous. This research paper presents a comprehensive framework for applying Cognitive Load Theory to enhance craft education and training via eLearning platforms. In this study, practical guidelines based on CLT principles are provided to optimize the instructional design and content delivery. These guidelines scaffold craft learning experiences within eLearning platforms and encompass strategies to manage cognitive load, promote active learning , and facilitate gradual transition. Subsequently, the paper details the implementation of these guidelines within a popular eLearning platform, Moodle, emphasizing its adaptability and utility for craft education. It discusses the customization of Moodle courses to align with the cognitive load management principles, providing a practical blueprint for educators and instructional designers. The research culminates in a case study, wherein the guidelines are applied to a craft eLearning course using Moodle. © 2023 by the authors.

A global transition to low-carbon, resource-efficient economies is occurring in response to risks posed by climate change and environmental degradation. Hydrogen is proposed as a zero-carbon substitute for natural gas with the potential to reduce carbon emissions in homes and businesses. Trades, including gasfitting, will be affected by the transition to a low-carbon economy and require upskilling to develop competencies to work with hydrogen to ensure safety and support domestic uptake. Understanding the training needs of trades practitioners is essential to the successful transition to a zero-carbon economy. This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of Australian gasfitters, exploring what motivates gasfitters to participate in training, what informs their ongoing learning and what their preferences are for hydrogen training. Most gasfitters are either self-employed or work in small businesses, and, as such, this context presents both challenges and opportunities to consider in upskilling strategies. Drawing on interview findings and literature on small business learning , the paper presents considerations to inform training approaches and policies in the transition to hydrogen and also, more broadly, for upskilling other small trade businesses similarly affected by a shift to low-carbon and green technologies. © 2024 The Author(s). Under the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial change, the integration of vocational education and industry is an important direction of educational development. In this paper, the structure of the learning path network of higher vocational professional courses is analyzed, and through the analysis of the elements of learning behaviors, the learning behaviors are mined by adopting sequence relations, and the behavioral structure model is established. The assessment of the learning path under the integration of industry and education courses was finished using uncertainty association coefficients and time association coefficients. After building the learning path network for vocational education, the subjective characteristics of students under vocational education were detected using isolated point analysis. The detection results show that the correlation coefficient between the first pair of typical variables is 0.488. The Wilks statistical test results for typical correlation coefficients show that the p-value of the first typical correlation coefficient is 0.098, which is less than 10%. The correlation study of the environment of integration of education and industry and the effect of integration can be simplified to study only the relationship between the first pair of typical variables. By analyzing the main characteristics, the main body for vocational education and industry integration is clarified, which creates a digital-driven impetus for the integration of industry and education. © 2023 Yi Guo, published by Sciendo.

Educational institutions shape knowledges that students learn upstream and apply downstream in everyday life, notably in workplaces. Based on a critical synthesis of interdisciplinary literatures, the paper argues that current pedagogy datafies knowledges through the edtech industry, prioritizing skills and circumventing contextual and conceptual knowledges. The pedagogical orientation inculcates technocratic, non-relational thinking, obscures the effects of applications to which workers bring their learned skills, and prefigures deepening social and data injustice in a world beset with intensifying societal tensions and deep inequalities. Although scholarship on current educational trajectories presumes that the new, purportedly ‘disruptive’ digitalized technology has prompted a new pedagogy, I show that the so-called ‘new’ pedagogy has a history that would have predicted the wide-ranging problems evident in non-relational thinking and lack of critique in the data sciences and among its users. © The Author(s) 2024.

Globally, higher education policy is typically framed in terms of the technical employability capabilities to advance the economic productivity of nations, and as such, can be myopic to the wider sustainable development challenge of ‘Decent Work’ (a form of employment with good working conditions). This form of myopia can fail to materially change the sociocultural conditions in local contexts of learning and work and ultimately perpetuate structural disadvantage. This article draws from policy participation conducted over 4 years which included (i) longitudinal focus group dialogue involving educational policy makers, implementers and students (n = 102) and (ii) document analysis of formal policy and evaluation reports. The study is conducted in one of the fastest growing economies which is rapidly developing its policy frameworks (Vietnam) to enhance the employability of ethnic minority students. Findings highlight the need for (i) a meta-perspective which encompasses the multiple stakeholders involved in enabling students to access and engage in decent work, (ii) building the capacity of students to actively change and improve their situations and (iii) awareness of the ways in which governments, educational institutions and employers can value the diversity of students and their circumstances. In contrast to the dominant institutional perspective, this article conceptualises the counter-active effects across education-work ecosystems which mediate policy efficacy and advances an alternative conceptual framework that integrates ecosystems, empowerment and recognition theory to inform policy formulation and assessment. This article advocates expansive rather than myopic policy to drive participation in Decent Work. © 2024 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Background: In recent years, the need for competency-based medical education has been emphasised. Each country needs a defined set of physiotherapy competencies from the associations and governing bodies. Objectives: Our review aimed to map competencies of undergraduate physiotherapy education and propose a context-specific competency framework for Namibia. Method: This scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute framework and was reported using the Preferred Reporting for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews. Qualitative direct content analysis utilising the five main competency domains from the WHO Rehabilitation Competency Framework was adapted. Results: Five main competency domains were proposed: practice, professional growth and involvement, learning and development, management and leadership, and research. Nineteen potential competencies were identified, and each competency has a set of knowledge and skills activities that is expected of each student. Conclusion: The proposed competencies still need to undergo expert consensus and content validation before they can be adopted and implemented in Namibia. Future studies can explore the perspectives and experiences of the faculty, students and clinicians on the current status of competency-based education of undergraduate physiotherapy programme in Namibia. Similarly, future studies can focus on possible assessment strategies that can be used for each competency and an evaluation framework for assessing milestones in student competencies from entry into clinical education to graduation. Clinical implications: The review proposed a context-specific competency framework for Namibia with a set of knowledge and skills activities that is expected of each student. The faculty can adopt these competencies and improve on their competency-based physiotherapy education. © 2024. The Authors.

Background: The teachers in one sub-district in the North West province lacked technological knowledge and skills thus did not adopt a blended learning approach in their daily teaching. A partnership between the University of South Africa (Unisa) and schools in the district was forged to train teachers to acquire technological knowledge and skills. Objectives: To identify which online tools Unisa imparted to teachers, investigate how the acquired skills and knowledge helped teachers to adopt a blended learning approach and find out challenges that go with the application of technology. Method: Data were obtained through observation, one-on-one individual interviews and focus group discussions. Results: The Unisa training helped develop teachers’ knowledge and skills in the use of TEAMS, Emails, WhatsApp, you tube and the electronic content- material. Teachers gave learners the electronic content (presentation slides and You-videos, question banks) for revision purposes. During the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) learners were given work to do while at home using WhatsApp. Conclusion: The article concludes by indicating that partnerships between schools and institutions of higher learning are a necessity to empower teachers on the use of technology which will lead to the use of a blended learning approach. Contribution: The article adds to the body of knowledge by indicating the need for retraining of teachers especially on technological skills to prepare them for 4th Industrial Revolution and meet the needs of the new cohort of learners-born after technology. © The Author(s) 2024.

Project-based learning (PBL) is an alternative teaching approach which addresses the need for student-centered learning fostering a global shift towards 21st century skills of collaboration and problem-solving. This research examined the effect of PBL on English language students' productive skills during their freshman year at Majmmaah University. The research used a mixed-method design, including pre- and post-tests, semi-structured interviews, and participant observations. The sample size was calculated using Sloven’s formula employing a simple random sampling technique. Twelve female freshmen undergraduate students aged 18-22 from Majmmah University's first-year were sampled for writing and speaking IELTS test, observation research and interviews. The researchers used t-test using SPSS 24.0. The significance level was found to be less than the threshold of 0.05, indicating that the students speaking and writing performance improved after getting introduced to the PBL strategies. Semi-structured interviews revealed that PBL significantly improved students' English proficiency, including linguistic proficiency, individual and social attitudes, autonomy, motivation, confidence, research skills, creativity, and collaborative learning skills. It was also noted that during 10 weeks, initially, participants showed reduced use of L2, with L1 being their primary mode of communication. Their writing assignments contained 45% mistakes, plagiarism, and copied words. After the third stage, participants showed progress in linguistic proficiency and learning skills. They became more engaged in class discussions, developed autonomy, and increased personal skills. Thus, the study recommends implementing PBL in the Universities of Saudi Arabia to enhance speaking and writing skills of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. © 2024 Society for Research and Knowledge Management.
