Experts’ consensus on the design of a technical communication module for vocational college students in the manufacturing sector

In the twenty-first century one of the most significant challenges is preparing professionals to adequately communicate technical information when writing and speaking. A number of studies have been published on various aspects of technical communication (TC), but few studies in China have investigated the curriculum design for TC. In this study, expert consensus was sought to explore elements required for a TC module for vocational college students in the manufacturing sector using the fuzzy Delphi method (FDM). The FDM was employed to determine consensus among a panel of 12 experts. Two rounds of data collection were conducted to garner opinions from the experts. The first round was semi-structured interviews among five experts to design the items for the FDM questionnaire with a five-point linguistic scale. The designed FDM questionnaire was distributed to 12 experts to gather their opinions on the elements required for the TC module. The data analysis determined the consensus on the elements of the TC module in four categories: objectives, contents, learning activities, and assessment methods. Their levels of agreement were assessed to determine elements that needed to be highlighted for implementation in the classroom. These findings could be used to develop a more relevant instructional module for TC in the manufacturing sector. © The Author(s) 2024.

Guided play as a pedagogical tool for the early grades

Background: Research has shown the benefits of play for children’s learning and development. Play can also be harnessed for pursuing pre-determined learning goals related to school curricula through ‘guided’ play. Aim: The research inquired into the implementation of a pre-service teacher education course on play as pedagogy to evaluate and refine the course’s design principles. Setting: The study was conducted at the University of Johannesburg, involving pre-service teachers within the Bachelor of Education in the foundation phase of schooling. Methods: The research formed part of a broader design-based research study. The data were collected via questionnaires, interviews, analysis of students’ work and a research journal. A combination of inductive and deductive data analysis was used. Results: The way in which the course was designed and implemented was successful in helping students develop a basic understanding of guided play, although there were gaps in their understanding of their guiding role; student teachers learnt that creativity could be developed through play. Conclusion: In general, the design principles served the course and its implementation well because students learnt much about guided play. However, a major gap was the insufficient focus on guiding practices. Such practices should receive considerable attention in a pre-service teacher education course on guided play. A stronger focus on the interconnectedness of play and creativity in a course on guided play for pre-service teachers will be beneficial. Contribution: The research on teacher preparation for using play-based teaching and learning is limited. This study contributes to addressing this gap. © 2024. The Authors.

The aim of the paper is to summarise the industrial needs relating to the research and development, test-before-invest and life-long learning. The main focus of the research is to increase the utilisation rates of the research and education environments by developing methods to allow access to these for the industry and other stakeholders. The paper starts with the summary of the needs collected from the field. The development of the needed services follows the D-BEST methodology. The paper presents the services catalogue planning and implementation process, and shortly introduces the laboratories where the new investments relating to the services are being deployed. Attitude towards technical and vocational education and training (TVET): examining the effect of behavioral insights approach

This study examines secondary students’ attitudes toward TVET. The public mindset of 3D illusions affects Malaysia’s future aspirations for TVET. The purpose of this study is to understand why high school students do not value skills education as a means of improving their career prospects. A behavioral Insights approach was developed based on behavioral theories and social learning theory to identify environmental, social, and personal influences on student attitude. In this study, two phases were conducted- a survey and an experimental phase. The overall findings indicated that there was a low level of negative attitudes toward TVET. As a result of experimental testing, significant changes in attitudes towards TVET’s curriculum & goals, as well as its roles, were discovered. The study results indicate that TVET literacy can reduce the negative mindset of TVET and encourage more after-school students to pursue TVET and join the pool of skilled workers. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The Impact of Cross-cutting Pedagogical Features Based on Neuroeducation Advances: Project-based learning Vs. Traditional Lecturing in Engineering Education

On the academic level of education, Traditional Lecturing represents the primary means of conveying information to the class. At the same time, Project-based learning is one of the major research subjects in engineering education, and literature claims it can offer more authentic and meaningful learning experiences. Supported by the most recent advances in syntheses of meta-analyses in education and neuroscientific-based educational sciences, the study presented compares Traditional Lecturing and two versions of Project-based learning implemented with variations in content and project typologies through a single-group variation on the two-group post-test-only randomized experiment. Two research hypotheses were investigated using three questionnaires and a test: I) the learning experience and outcomes are enhanced when attending Project-based learning lessons compared to Traditional Lecturing ones; II) effective cross-cutting instructional elements are more detectable in Project-based learning than in Traditional Lecturing and variations in contents and typologies of project do not lead to different outcomes within Project-based learning. The research was carried out in an Engineering course and involved 80 students. The results show that Project-based learning outperforms Traditional Lecturing and highlight the crucial role of some cross-cutting instructional features that are detectable or missing within the two methodologies. Derived from meta-analyses and neuroscientific-based educational sciences, these features represent a solid pedagogical core within the structure of the Project-based learning methodology. We argue they have a relevant role in the stability and enhancement of the results of Project-based learning in comparison with Traditional Lecturing. Indeed, despite variations in content and project typologies, Project-based learning produces similar results. Finally, for engineering teachers wishing to adopt Project-based learning, this study provides insights into the necessity to understand, consciously incorporate, support, and manipulate such particular features, especially through developing pedagogical competence based on scientific evidence. © 2024, Rajarambapu Institute Of Technology. Development and validation of a blended learning perception scale for higher vocational students

Blended learning, a pedagogical approach that seamlessly integrates online and offline teaching methods, has evolved into a pivotal component of higher education. In order to assess students’ perspectives on their experiences with blended learning in higher vocational schools, we developed a comprehensive tool known as the Blended learning Perception Scale (BLPS). The scale’s reliability and validity have been rigorously substantiated through data obtained from 600 students enrolled in a vocational school in China. The creation of this scale primarily entailed the application of quantitative methodologies, including both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The final scale encompasses 24 items, categorizing student perceptions into five distinct factors: content coherence, interaction effectiveness, platform functionality, learning motivation, and learning satisfaction. Collectively, these factors elucidate 68.346% of the total variance. Moreover, the Cronbach’s coefficients (α) for these factors range from 0.791 to 0.842, denoting a high degree of internal consistency and thereby establishing the scale’s reliability. Item-based analysis further substantiates the scale’s reliability and discriminability, while confirmatory factor analysis unequivocally confirms its structural validity. Each factor’s average variance extracted (AVE) ranges from 0.589 to 0.671, with a cumulative value of 2.766. Additionally, the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RSMEA) recorded at 0.053 underscores the scale’s satisfactory level of structural validity. In essence, this study presents a valid and dependable instrument for gauging students’ perceptions of blended learning, thoughtfully tailored to the specific attributes of higher vocational education and its students. Furthermore, it offers insights into the areas that necessitate further enhancement within blended learning programs. © The Author(s).

Reflecting on Integrating Team-Based learning into Project-Based Practical Courses to Enhance Social-Emotional learning

Taiwan’s new 12-year basic education curriculum has been in place for four years. The development of the curriculum is based on the spirit of whole-person education, with “spontaneity, interaction, and mutual benefit” as its philosophy. The spirit of the new curriculum is echoed. Team-Based learning (TBL) can be described as a unique and powerful form of small-group learning through which teachers can also develop the highest assessable performance of their students, prompting them to show all that they have learned and allowing them to demonstrate their learning. Social-Emotional learning (SEL) has attracted attention and discussion in the field of K12 education, and in recent years, it has been gradually developed in higher education and adult vocational education and training. In this study, 15 students were divided into 5 groups to promote team-based learning method into the project-based practical course and to participate in project-based competition activities. At the end of the course, 15 students were interviewed qualitatively to observe the development of their SEL. From the qualitative interviews conducted after the activity, it was observed that the students grew in the process of accepting and embracing different ideas, and became more active learners and problem solvers, and the cultivation of cross-disciplinary talents could help develop students’ core competencies. On the other hand, students’ confidence in self-decision making is enhanced through effective interpersonal interactions in TBL. During the process, students explore themselves, increase self-discipline, demonstrate their self-worth, and use interpersonal skills in groups to foster and effectively enhance SEL. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A study on Taiwan’s vocational senior high school teachers’ teaching identity and teaching transformation when facing a new competency-based curriculum

Introduction: The competency of education is advocated in the 2023 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. UNESCO encourages countries to provide inclusive, equitable, competency education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. Starting from 2019, 12-Year-Basic-Education, a new curriculum, was fully implemented in Taiwan to conform to the competency education strategy. For the teachers on site, teachers’ understanding of the new curriculum and teaching practice has a direct impact on the competency of the implementation of this new policy. The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between vocational senior high school teachers’ competency-oriented teaching, teaching identity and teaching transformation regarding this new curriculum. Methods: In order to effectively expand teachers’ understanding of competency-oriented teaching identity, this study put forward 6 hypothetical approaches based on the implicit theory of teaching transformation. The 747 valid questionnaires accounted for 97.1% of the total recovered questionnaires. The reliability and validity analyses, as well as overall model fitting analysis and research model validation were performed on these valid questionnaires. Results: The results of the study showed: (1) With the background of Competency-oriented teaching, teachers’ teaching attitude and teaching willingness has a positive impact on teaching identity; (2) teachers’ teaching identity has a positive impact on teaching preparation, teaching practice, further study, three types of teaching transformation. In summary, three conclusions from this study were concluded on the aspects of teaching preparation, teaching practice and further study on practical competency-oriented teaching, teaching identity and teaching transformation in the educational field. Conclusion: Three conclusions were derived for the relationships among these six constructs: (1) Teachers with a “good attitude” and “strong willingness” to teach, a “high sense of identification” acceptance and full implement of “teaching preparation” are considered as teachers with a “foresight and a visionary predictive style”; (2) Teachers with a high sense of self-awareness who can fully practice “teaching practice” are teachers with a “pragmatic teaching by example style”; (3) Teachers with a “good attitude,” a “strong willingness” to teach, a “high sense of identification” acceptance and who are able to fully practice “advanced research” are considered as teachers with an “empowerment-enhancing coaching style”. © © 2024 Lin, Lee and Ye.

Individual learning paths mastering teachers’ professional vision

Introduction: Promoting a professional vision of teaching as a key factor of teachers’ expertise is a core challenge for teacher professionalization. While research on teaching has evolved and successfully evaluated various video-based intervention programs, a prevailing emphasis on outcome measures can yet be observed. However, the learning processes by which teachers acquire professional vision currently remain a black box. The current study sought to fill this research gap. As part of a course dedicated to promoting a professional vision of classroom management, students were imparted knowledge about classroom management that had to be applied to the analysis of authentic classroom videos. The study aimed to determine the variety of individual strategies that students applied during their video analyses, and to investigate the relationship between these and the quality of the students’ analyses, measured by their agreement with an experts’ rating of the video clips. Methods: The sample comprised 45 undergraduate pre-service teachers enrolled in a course to acquire a professional vision of classroom management. By applying their imparted knowledge of classroom management, students engaged in the analysis of classroom videos to learn how to notice and interpret observable events that are relevant to effective classroom management. Implementing a learning analytical approach allowed for the gathering of process-related data to analyze the behavioral patterns of students within a digital learning environment. Video-based strategies were identified by conducting cluster analyses and related to the quality of the students’ analysis outcomes, measured by their concordance with the experts’ ratings. Results: We gained insight into the learning processes involved in video-based assignments designed to foster a professional vision of classroom management, such as the areas of interest that attracted students’ heightened attention. We could also distinguish different approaches taken by students in analyzing classroom videos. Relatedly, we found clusters indicating meticulous and less meticulous approaches to analyzing classroom videos and could identify significant correlations between process and outcome variables. Discussion: The findings of this study have implications for the design and implementation of video-based assignments for promoting professional vision, and may serve as a starting point for implementing process-based diagnostics and providing adaptive learning support. © © 2024 Oellers, Junker and Holodynski.

A scoping review of professional skills development in engineering education from 1980–2020

Engineering students are expected to develop their professional skills throughout the course of their degrees. Yet, there is no clear consensus among educators of which skills are being developed or how this is done effectively. This scoping review has been produced to draw together and disseminate information on effective techniques for developing six specific professional skills (communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership, project management and entrepreneurship) and tracing the evolution of these skills in engineering education. Using search engines and backwards and forwards snowballing, a scoping literature review on skills development in engineering was conducted, encompassing a 40-year time span (1980–2020). Specified search terms, and inclusion criteria were applied, and findings have been presented quantitatively and qualitatively. In total, 165 studies were included. Key findings indicate skills are more nuanced and accepted today than they were in 1980, with an increased focus on specific skill areas. Additionally, more sophisticated integrated delivery methods are used to teach skills, although short courses remain popular. By synthesising data in this way, professional educators can identify what skill areas to focus on, and how to teach these skills for effective development among students. Gaps in knowledge are also identified through this review. This study is significant in that it has created an exceptionally useful roadmap of skills development, which is of benefit to the engineering community and beyond. © 2024 The Author(s).
