Since 2015, the Taiwan government has endeavoured to uphold maker education for all-level schools. In addition to “learning by doing” or “learning through play”, maker education believed to have varied features that set it apart from preceding pedagogical approaches and have possibility to reform learners’ requisite competencies for future. Engaging with “social care” as the mind-set for example, it could drive maker movement towards a value-oriented disposition. This paper discusses the theoretical roots of maker education, collates its beliefs about the whole, and probes the correlation between social design and maker education. We studied how the experimental pedagogy of social-design-based making based on the text of “The Old Man and The Sea” was used at the 2017 New Taipei City Maker Workshop in Taiwan. And we constructed a case study to document its effects within the classroom context. The study revealed that the teaching model of social-design-based maker education would be the sequence as “topic choosing, problem defining, sympathy triggering, conception outputting, prototype making, integrating and sharing”, the proportion of teachers’/students’ roles in maker courses should be in half of the overall lessons, and teachers’ instructions should be concentrated on offering key questions and assisting on integrating learning points mainly. © 2019, © 2019 National Institute of Education, Singapore.

Understanding the basic concepts of mechanical engineering is very important to support the knowledge of engineering. The level of students' understanding is influenced by teaching methods and student learning styles. The aim of this article is to implement an active learning model based on experiential learning by considering learning styles for mechanical engineering vocational students. This study was performed in a state vocational school of a regency in Central Java. Case studies are carried out in the Basic Engineering Mechanical Design subjects in vocational high schools. Mastery of the basic concepts of machine design is a basic competency supporting knowledge to study and explore the field of mechanical engineering. Student learning style preferences were measured using a Index of Learning Style (ILS) by Felder-Solomon. Identifying learning style preferences could be beneficial to the teacher because they could maximize the learning process by adjusting methods, strategies, and teaching approaches. The learning process includes two basic concepts of mechanical engineering regarding force and restraint. Experiential learning is chosen because it is able to actively involve students in learning. In this study an active learning worksheet was developed which was intended to help students construct knowledge and was expected to be able to improve students' understanding through activities or experiential learning directly in accordance with their learning styles. © 2019 Author(s).

The failure of engineering education in Nigeria has been blamed on many factors from various research findings. To have an in-depth view of some of the problems, this study reviewed research findings on the methods of teaching engineering and related programs in Nigerians institutions of learning. The study reviewed articles and theses on teaching methods in Nigeria, skills need of the 21st century and the 4th industrial revolution, and how the existing teaching methods impart the needed skills. The review showed that: the most popular teaching methods of teaching engineering and related programs in Nigeria are lecture method, laboratory experiment, field trip and final year practical project; the skills that the 21st century industry and 4IR demand are critical thinking, innovation and creativity, problem solving, teamwork, life-long learning, and communication skills; the teaching methods employed in Nigeria are not able to impart the needed skills. The researchers, therefore recommended innovative, students centered learning like problem based learning, project based learning, inquiry based learning and well as effective utilization of instructional resources like multimedia, simulations and virtual laboratory for the teaching and learning of engineering, science and technology programs. ©BEIESP.

Vocational High School has an essential role in preparing the competent workers for the industry. To encounter the 4.0 industrial revolution era, Vocational High Schools must be able to keep up with developments by revitalizing a roadmap so the graduates have in line competencies with the industry's needs. The revitalization of the Vocational High School roadmaps is inseparable from the principles of 2013 curriculum, the improvement of teacher's quality competencies through training in the industry, and the application of student-centred learning models, such as; Project Based Learning (PrBL), Problem Based Learning (PBL) that emphasizes on ability for innovation and creativity, the improvement of education personnel's competence, and the collaboration with business and industrial world. The fulfilment of eight Indonesia National Education Standards (NES) has become absolute. The finding of this study are four main aspects as the basic of vocational road maps revitalization, namely; (1) synchronizing the curriculum with industry, (2) revitalizing the quality of teaching staff and education personnel, (3) revitalizing facilities and infrastructure, (4) optimizing cooperation with industry, and (5) strengthening soft skills competence. © Academic Research Publishing Group.

This article is to investigate the learner’s behaviour in music teaching applying information technology using ISM with Fuzzy and MICMAC approach. Since learner’s behaviour features multiple characteristics which are complicated and interact with each other, this article makes clear the relationships within characteristics of learning behaviour and provides education institutions with instruction on teaching strategies for music teaching applying information technology on activating learners’ learning behaviour. This research shows that music teaching applying information technology affects behaviour relating to learners’ online learning attitudes, music learning motivation, and learning engagement. The dominance of Indonesia's youth unemployment rate is currently occupied by vocational school graduates. The incompatibility of competencies prepared in vocational schools with the competencies needed by the labour market triggers this unemployment rate. Discussion of employability skills as a basic skill is high among human resource developers. The learning process must pay attention to the profile of labour needed so that the gap can be overcome. This study aims to measure the increase in employability skills in problem solving skills of students through teaching factory model. The study sample was 60 students from vocational schools who conducted teaching factory on bread production in West Java. Improved problem solving skills are measured based on 5 indicators, are work safety, managing facilities, making decisions, knowing how to learn, and solving problems. 37 competency units are prepared based on national work standards as a guideline for measuring students' problem solving skills. Achievement of employability skills in problem solving skills of students in SMKN 1 Pacet is higher than SMKN 1 Cibadak, and SMKN 2 Subang. The causes of differences in the achievement of employability skills are discussed. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Based on an ecological view of teacher resilience, the paper investigates perceived difficulties and resources among vocational education and training (VET) teachers as a first step for investigating teachers’ resilience. Given the substantial shortage of theoretical and empirical studies on this population, more research on resilience among VET teachers is necessary and relevant. In this exploratory qualitative study, interviews with VET teachers in Switzerland (n = 37) sought to identify the specific challenges faced by teachers, the resources to be addressed. As well as confirming the different critical challenges and protective factors emerging from the literature review, the results identify difficulties and resources specific to VET teachers in Switzerland. In terms of critical challenges at a macro-contextual level, teachers’ low social recognition is emphasised. Moreover, exposure to curricular reforms generates stress and pressure related to the required standardisation of content and subject changes. At a micro-system level, we detected teachers’ frustration in relation to students’ low vocational motivation and maturity and specific emerging instructional challenges in vocational subject teaching . In terms of resources, teachers perceived the possibility of diversifying their professional role by alternating school and extracurricular activities as a supportive factor. Presents updated knowledge regarding the evolution and the state of initial training of child education professionals in Germany and Sweden. The study was conducted through an analysis of experiences that help to learn other educational realities from a comparative methodological perspective. The results reflect similarities between the initial training of these professionals in the two countries studied, both of which combine professional training with higher studies depending on the professional category (service, ancillary and teaching -assistant personnel). There were also differences related to the type of center in which the training was provided, the length of professional training and other questions related with later professional performance. It concludes by addressing the unquestionable influence the Bologna Process has had in contributing significant changes. © 2019 Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

The authors offer a historic review of the making of polytechnic education; they also highlight dynamics of its development at the Russian Far Eastern territory as compared with the general global trends. The article emphasizes that the principal centers for engineering education at this territory are Primorsky Krai and Khabarovsky Krai. The content of polytechnic education curricula at the local universities is formed based on analysis of general global trends in science, technology, and culture. The content of engineering education is also influenced by regional factor, which, in its turn, is shaped by the needs of economic development both of the Russian Far East and of APR countries. Within the frames of study conducted, the authors conclude that, despite the positive changes, the weak part of polytechnic education at the Russian Far East is insufficient training of agro industrial engineers. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
