The paper contains several findings of the study of the Russian universities' system related to pedagogical training of PhD students, which has been carried on in the framework of the ERASMUS+ Capacity Building for HE project EXTEND (# 586060-EPP-1-2017-1-RO-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP)-"Excellence in Engineering Education through Teacher Training and New Pedagogic Approaches in Russia and Tajikistan". The project itself is devoted to the training of new personnel for the engineering universities. The strengths and weaknesses of the Russian system of pedagogical training of young teachers are under discussion in this article. The Introduction part of the paper describes the Russian system of education, EXTEND project main activities, Project Consortium participants, objective of the analysis of curriculum contents of PhD programs in engineering in Russian universities, including courses and internships on pedagogy, learning outcomes and PhD student's teaching competences and motivation. The methodology part of the paper draws the four stages of the research. The main part of the paper presents the results of the analysis of the 22 PhD programs collected by Russian universities' team. The Discussion part consists of four recommendations on how to enhance the Russian teacher preparation. © 2019 Elisabeth Lazarou et al., published by Sciendo.

This paper examines the context of evidence-informed practice (EIP) by inquiring into how educational practice is defined and organised, and how predominant understandings of educational practice are concomitant with preferences for particular forms of evidence. This leads to discussion of how certain educational research traditions speak (or are unable to speak) to these evidence requirements, and how this shapes the nature of EIP. While the rise of EIP can be understood as part of the increasing attention paid by governments to systemic ‘improvement’ in education systems, it can be argued that the lack of a coherent body of educational knowledge in many national traditions enables governments to exercise control not only of definitions of ‘what works’ in education but also over conceptualisations of educational practice. For some policy makers and practitioners, the much-remarked dislocation between ‘evidence’ and teaching practice in many national contexts can only be solved by a narrowing of what counts as knowledge alongside a more prescriptive control over what counts as acceptable educational judgement. However, such an alignment serves to exclude wider educational purposes and arguably instrumentalises pedagogical relations. Meanwhile, some continental European countries maintain traditions that may serve to mitigate such developments, although these traditions are not without challenge. © 2019, MDPI AG. Employers and policy makers have criticized higher education institutions for the perceived knowledge and skills deficiencies of their graduates. This article seeks to identify the gaps between employer needs, curricular priorities, and accrediting standards, specifically in the management domain. To this end, the authors content analyzed 200 job announcements for entry-level management positions in the 10 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the United States and the learning goals of 51 business programs, comparing both to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business’s Standard 9. While the findings demonstrate considerable overlap between employers’ stated needs, business programs’ curricular focus, and accrediting standards, notable gaps emerged, especially in the area of self-management. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for both business programs and accrediting bodies. © The Author(s) 2019.

Background: Concept-based curricula, coupled with conceptual approach to teaching , fosters conceptual learning. There is a need for clarity in the definition of conceptual learning. Method: Walker and Avant’s method of concept analysis was used. Results: Conceptual learning is a process in which learners organize concept-relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes to form logical cognitive connections resulting in assimilation, storage, retrieval, and transfer of concepts to applicable situations, familiar and unfamiliar. Attributes identified were (a) recognizing patterns in information, (b) forming linkages with concepts, (c) acquiring deeper understanding of concepts, (d) developing personal relevance, and (e) applying concepts to other situations. Antecedents were (a) learner cognitive potential, (b) organized conceptual framework, and (c) conceptual approach to teaching . Consequences were (a) enhanced synthesis and analysis, (b) improved problem solving, (c) ability to translate theory to practice, (d) appreciation of linear/nonlinear ways of thinking, and (e) enhanced concept construction. Conclusion: This analysis provides a referent for recognizing the occurrence of conceptual learning and developing instruments to measure its outcomes. © 2019, Slack Incorporated. In this article I describe how a project-based approach can be implemented when training subtitlers. I present collaborative project-based work carried out at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University of Warsaw, as part of an optional module on subtitling in the MA Programme in Translation. The project was conducted in cooperation with the Polish National Film Archive. As part of the project, students had to subtitle into English some Polish pre-World War II films. I describe the project, the structure and content of the course, the working methods, the assessment and the students' feedback. Finally, I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a project-based approach compared to traditional subtitling teaching models within the higher education framework. © 2019 Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen - Hoger Instituut voor Vertalers en Tolken. When new advanced technologies showed up in the market, teacher's role in distance learning step further in its path to change. Teachers often fail to find what their purpose of acting among technologies is and what the method for teaching elementary school students online would be right. Considering student's need in communication with a teacher to be at the core of learning as it is, we define what shape the new curricula will take from year to year. This research is a two-stage experiment with two additional surveys that included 430 students aged 8-9 years from across the Republic of Tatarstan. Students need not only facilitators to get better grades, but also a teacher mentoring them. Student-teacher communication can help students to raise their academic performance and motivation. Questions asked by students in time reduce the number of those who cannot reach their grade level from 9% to 0%, and increase the number of A-level students from 11% to 26%. The results confirm that the on-the-spot teaching method should be introduced into the e-learning curricula for primary school so that it provides a more intimate communication between the student and the teacher during classes. Results can be put into practical context to create new e-learning courses for public and private schools. © 2019 International Journal of Instruction.

Lessons Learned from Novice Teachers: An International Perspective

The transition from being a student teacher to taking on the full responsibility as a teacher is experienced as challenging for many novice teachers. In this book, ten newly qualified teachers from five countries, Australia, England, Finland, Israel and Norway, tell their stories as they came through in individual interviews. The narratives, written by the authors, were all approved by the teachers as 'their' stories. What can we learn from listening to the narratives? What can we bring to decision-makers about how to support new teachers? Do new teachers face similar challenges around the world, or do experiences depend on their respective contexts? There are more similarities than differences. Relevant research literature is used in discussing the cases. Much of the literature on novice teachers focuses on difficulties, and the stories presented in this book confirm that the first year is tough. However, the resilience, motivation and enthusiasm reflected in the stories provide reasons for optimism as regards teachers’ satisfaction with their career choice. A major reason for deciding to stay in the profession is in the relations they created with the students. Satisfaction or stress related to the curriculum or achievements in their respective teaching subjects was not mentioned. The lessons learned from the ten novice teachers are useful when discussing the teaching profession and, not least, the induction phase of a teaching career. © 2019 by Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, The Netherlands.

The learning of programming using simulation involves unique educational environments and human factors. However, research in this field has been mainly centred on the efficacy of the simulation tool whereas there is a lack of comparative studies between the associated teaching and learning procedures. To address the gap, this study facilitates an evidence-driven discussion on learning and teaching , as well as their relationship, in simulation-based programming education. Investigation areas include virtual and physical environments of simulation sessions, relevant learning enablers and impediments, and roles of students and faculty members in the process. The study followed qualitative methodology using focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Thirty-seven students and four lecturers on a computing course at a British university shared experiences and perceptions on simulation-based programming sessions. The data were analysed thematically and through cross-evaluation. The findings have provided fresh insights on several enabling and challenging aspects of simulation-based programming education. On the one hand, visualisation, consistency of learning procedures, and student engagement emerged as empowering factors. On the other, the negative implications of collaborative tasks, students’ attention diversion while shifting between virtual and physical environments of learning, and lecturers’ over-emphasis on technology in teaching preparation, appeared as challenges. The paper contributes to understanding the advantages and challenges of using simulation in programming education. It suggests essential teaching principles and their application procedures, which add value to the overall computing education at tertiary level. The learning is transferrable among other engineering programmes and academic disciplines that use simulation for educational purposes. © 2019, The Author(s).

The dual system is currently one of the most valued VET systems on an international level and is being transferred to many countries as a measure to improve youth unemployment rates and adjust training to the productive sector. It began to be implemented in Spain in 2013 and the available data shows a progressive increase in the participation of students, centers and companies. However, it is necessary to analyze the perception of the key agents, such as teachers, about the facilitators and the elements that hinder the development of the system: this is the main goal of this study. A questionnaire designed ad hoc was administered to a representative sample of training centers (management teams, tutors and coordinators) in five regions. The results show some positive elements, such as the decision to carry out the dual model by consensus and the students’ motivation. However, other results show difficulties on the part of the centers when adapting to the implementation of dual training: teacher training deficiencies regarding the system, insufficient resources, lack of recognition of the role played by the teaching staff and lack of time among school tutors. Moreover, findings indicate that public schools express more difficulties; and that teachers in the centers where dual training is already being implemented perceive more favorable conditions, identifying fewer barriers, compared to those that have not yet begun the implementation. The study provides the basis for future, more specific research on these key factors of implementation and their relationship with the learning outcomes in the students. © 2018, Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia. The rapid development of technology also affects employment. Depending on this situation, it is necessary to update the university curricula especially applied on the basis of technical program and to investigate the effect of the updated curriculum on success. In this study, it is aimed to determine the effects of change in the teaching curriculum applied to the technicians studying in Istanbul, which is one of the big cities of the world, with rapid population growth. In this context, 41 students who have studied in Marmara University Electronics and Automation Department’s second tuition Electronic Communication Technology program have been given a 38-item failure reasons questionnaire. Then the causes of failure were identified. By means of descriptive statistical method, frequency analysis was performed and the items with the highest frequency values were determined through the survey results. When the items are examined, it is revealed that the students who think there is a unemployement problem and who complain about the intensity in school have low success rates and expect the support of the lecturers due to this situation. As a result, in order to increase the success and motivation of the vocational education students; The establishment of vocational schools providing vocational and technical education in organized industrial zones and dissemination of these schools are presented as a suggestion for the training of qualified technicians. © 2019.
