Paying for education: Debating the price of progress

Book
Which type of education should we pay for? How much education should we pay for? Can we buy knowledge about how to improve education? Uniquely presenting a general overview of economic principles applicable to all sectors of education, Paying for Education makes key economic ideas accessible to non-economists, whilst drawing on insights from other social science disciplines. It examines the implications of its analysis, especially for two important areas of policy - paying for teachers and paying for teaching in higher education - in order to highlight some underlying issues and consider alternative policy options, as well as reflect on possible futures. The chapters examine: • The value of education for the individual • The value of education for society • Private and public demands for education • Choosing a system to supply education • The cost, efficiency and equity of providing education Analysing evidence and case studies on a global scale, Paying for Education is an essential read for academics, educational administrators, policy makers, leaders in educational organisations and all of those interested in the future of how we pay for education. © 2018 Peter Davies.

Development of professional skills in the initial training of teachers through dual training. The Alternancia model at University of Lleida and Urban teaching Academy at California State University Long Beach; El desarrollo de competencias profesionales en la formación inicial de maestros a través de la formación dual. El caso de modelo alternancia, universidad de lleida y urban teaching academy, California state university long beach)

Article
The initial formation of any academic degree has the goal of contributing in the necessary knowledge for the students, after they finish their studies, to develop the professional task they having preparing for. The correct application of the knowledge obtained in the workplace will be the guarantee in the success of higher education studies. However, the professional action in the school requires the development of the skills which can be obtained treating the contents separately and hoping that each student, by themselves, are able to connect and apply the skills together or they can also be obtained interlinked making it easier for students to develop them entirely. We develop a Case Studies (Simons, 2011)) with the aim to analyze of teaching practices offered at the level of Primary Education at the University of Lleida (UDL) Alternancia and at California State University Long Beach (CSCLB) Urban teaching Academy (UTEACH) in order to make improvement points for the training described in the formative proposals. Among the results we underline that the teacher value the knowledge of the students with this working methodology. They consider that the daily practice at school facilitates the skills development needed for teaching. We agree with Duijnhover, Prins, Stokking, (2012) that feedback and communication are essential to improve since students recognize that these aspects helped them to understand the meaning of their work. © 2018 Grupo de Investigacion FORCE. Maintaining capacity for in-practice teaching and supervision of students and general practice trainees: A cross-sectional study of early career general practitioners

Article
Objectives. Expanding learner cohorts of medical students and general practitioner (GP) vocational trainees and the impending retirement of the 'baby boomer' GP cohort threaten the teaching and supervisory capacity of the Australian GP workforce. Engaging newly qualified GPS is essential to sustaining this workforce training capacity. The aim of the present study was to establish the prevalence and associations of in-practice clinical teaching and supervision in early career GPS. Methods. The present study was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study of recent (within 5 years) alumni of three of Australia's 17 regional general practice training programs. The outcome factor was whether the alumnus taught or supervised medical students, GP registrars or other learners in their current practice. Logistic regression analysis was used to establish associations of teaching and supervision with independent variables comprising alumnus demographics, current practice characteristics and vocational training experiences. Results. In all, 230 alumni returned questionnaires (response rate 37.4%). Of currently practising alumni, 52.4% (95% confidence interval (CI) 45.6-59.0%) reported current teaching or supervisory activities. Factors significantly (P < 0.05) associated with alumni currently undertaking in-practice clinical teaching and supervision were: Australian medical graduation (odds ratio (OR) for international graduates 0.36; 95% CI 0.14-0.92), working in a regional or remote area (OR 2.75; 95% CI 1.24-6.11) and currently undertaking nursing home visits, home visits or after-hours work (OR 2.01; CI 1.02-3.94). © AHHA 2018.

Researcher-led academic development

Article
In this study, members of a higher education department explore their research activity and how it influences their practice as academic developers in a research-led institution. While the research activities of the team members appear diverse, they are all underpinned by a shared set of professional values to provide an anchor for these activities. Research-as-pedagogy and the relationship between the discourses of research and teaching are explored using Bernstein’s knowledge structures. The authors conclude that differences in research focus (horizontal discourse) provide dynamism across a department and that stability is provided through the underpinning core values inherent in the vertical discourse. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Development of pre-service teachers’ teaching self-efficacy beliefs through an online community of practice

Article
This explanatory research uses a mixed method design to investigate the effect of using an online community of practice within teaching practices on science and math pre-service teachers’ teaching self-efficacy beliefs. 102 science and math pre-service teachers participated in the research. “teaching Self-Efficacy Belief Scale” and “The Questionnaire on Opinions about Using Online Communities of Practice within teaching Practices” were the data collection tools of the study. Results showed that online communities of practice affected pre-service teachers’ teaching self-efficacy beliefs significantly and positively. Qualitative data of the research also supported this positive change. Science and math pre-service teachers mentioned several benefits of online communities of practice, such as sharing, recognizing common problems, freely expressing themselves, making comparison, realizing their shortcomings, and benefiting from the experiences of others. However, research findings also showed that online communities of practice have some limitations such as the lack of expressions of sincerity, the need for internet access, the need for additional time, and anxiety when it comes to criticism. © 2017, Education Research Institute, Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea.

Development of vignettes for learning and professional development

Article
Vignettes are short, descriptive stories of an incident of practice. They contain realistic contents and can therefore be a trigger for learning processes. The overall goal of this study is to develop work task vignettes as a trigger for learning processes and the professional development of geriatric nurses. First, the authors analyzed how vignettes have to be designed to use them as a trigger for learning processes and professional development. Second, based on these requirements, the authors developed four vignettes describing the work tasks of geriatric nursing staff and validated them in an interview study with 12 experts in the domain of geriatric nursing. Results indicate that the design of vignettes based on criteria for their style and content and the validation of the vignettes in an interview study with experts is an appropriate way to generate vignettes that can be used for learning and professional development. © 2018, © 2018 Taylor & Francis.

Research on the education of industry-education integration for geological majors

Article Open Access
The talent education model of “industry-education integration” has matured in some European countries. Foreign countries promote the integration of production and education in the national macro level and implement school-enterprise cooperation at the micro level. We identified the aims and models of the geological talents training and identified the direction of geology education reform through analysis and discussion. We can take the combination of industry and education at each stage of talent training by the means of making new training programs, reforming teaching contents and methods. The employment of geological undergraduates can be improved effectively by taking a multi-level talent training mode of geology majors with deep integration of production and education. © 2018 EDAM.

Informing a pedagogy for design and problem-solving in hard materials by theorising technologists’ learning experiences

Article
Design and problem solving are central to technology and have distinguished learning in technology from other curriculum areas. This research investigated how expert technologists learn design and problem solving through experience. Data was collected from four expert technologists and this information was analysed using learning theories that focus on learning through experience—that is experiential learning theory, situated cognition, distributed cognition and activity theory. This framework of analysis provided evidence that learning through experience is central to these experts’ development and justify a broader construct of experience than normally associated with hard materials. This information supports curriculum development in hard materials technology that employs a wide range of experiences and provides justification for curriculum developers and teachers to justify, inform and develop effective design and problem solving learning programmes focussed on a broadened construct of experience. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

“Feeding the monster”: Vocational pedagogy and the further education policy present

Book chapter Open Access
This chapter begins by comparing current models and structures of vocational education in the US with the vocational offers in colleges in England. While policy in the US has traditionally shied away from vocational ‘tracking’ because of the perception that this entrenches social division, increasingly, community colleges and other ‘technical’ educational institutions are seen as a way of marrying academic and industry-related education. Drawing on a research project involving teachers of vocational subjects from a number of different colleges in the West Midlands region of England, this chapter explores the reality as experienced by practitioners behind the recent policy anxiety about vocational pedagogy. It reveals how despite political rhetoric, policy initiatives to raise standards in vocational teaching and learning may not be yielding the results intended. It presents FE as a troubled landscape in which interventions under the Coalition government (2010-2015) targeting an improvement in vocational education appear to have diluted practitioners’ ability to deliver a rise in the quality of provision. The failure of these policy interventions is indicative of the disconnect between policymakers and practitioners which appears to be a key characteristic of the relationship between government and further education providers. The chapter concludes by focusing on existing accountability systems and how these, in effect, contribute to produce a simulated picture of colleges’ activities as dictated by the marketised environment, suggesting that it is this relationship rather than that between vocational teachers, vocational students and their learning that requires some critical attention and improvement. © 2018 selection and editorial matter, Pete Bennett and Rob Smith; individual chapters, the contributors.

The language of pedagogy today: What are the new teaching challenges?

Book
In the field of pedagogy, there are different publications about the processes of didactic interaction in the classroom. However, there are no scientific works that reflect an analysis showing the terms and expressions this language of specialty has in the conformation of its lexicon. This linguistic aspect in the discipline of pedagogy (language discourse in pedagogy) is extremely necessary and is constantly experiencing changes. When teachers interact in and out of the classroom, they make use of a language, terms and expressions that contain specific semantic meanings that strictly belong to this epistemological community and, in fact, those terms and expressions offer a certain scientific status to the pedagogical speech. If we consider that the pedagogical speech is constantly altered by the implementation of educative acts, teachers, researches and other educative agents need to know the new terms. These reasons have promoted the creation of this book, necessary for the professionals that work in the field of education: To analyze what kind of language teaching professionals use, how they communicate with students, what are the terms used to explain to parents the academic development of their child, etc. The reader will find in this book a characterization of the language of pedagogy through the analysis of its neologisms, anglicisms and technicisms. This book, then, is aimed at teachers, parents, researchers, stakeholders, counsellors, psychologists, pedagogists, teaching professionals, and to any interested in the field of education. They will find interesting insights into the scientific field of Pedagogy, knowing how a discipline builds its language. It is one step further to learn more about the epistemology of this discipline. The reader will find in this book an analysis of the terms that have acquired a specific meaning in the language of pedagogy and allow communication in this epistemological community. The book is divided into two major parts. The first one provides an extensive and current theoretical framework on neologisms of a loan in the language of pedagogy: interlingual loans, voices of classical languages and inter-linguistic loans, with examples to facilitate their understanding. The second part of this book shows a terminological analysis of technicisms, secondary terminologizations, acronyms and syntactic expressions. Therefore, the reader will have a holistic and specific overview of the language of pedagogy to properly understand its terms. Secondary terminologizations constitute a procedure to use the terms of a discipline in a different discipline with a new specialized meaning. Acronyms are also very frequent in the language of pedagogy and they supplement the lack of technicisms. The syntactic expressions contribute to allow communication between professional and non-professional speakers, and are characteristic of the language of pedagogy. Evidently, the epistemological community of pedagogy has a special language, which is used in specific communicative contexts and with different forms of content. This does not mean it is necessary to develop a semantic analysis, but rather to be aware of how words are created and what meanings are legitimized. For all these reasons, the authors considered the book necessary to contribute to a better knowledge and understanding of the discipline of pedagogy. © 2018 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
