This article evaluates an approach to teaching and assessment that deviates from the norm in higher education. It assesses graduating students' experiences with the BA (Hons) Event Management degree at a post-1992 university in the UK. Instead of writing a thesis, students stage a complex but sophisticated live event as partial fulfilment for their honors degree. The methodology was underpinned by an interpretivist philosophy with three graduating cohorts of 2012/13/14 participating in the research. The findings highlighted positive outcomes related to skills development and wider operational issues that affected student learning. The majority of students were satisfied with the overall degree outcomes but anxiety and fear about the assessment objectives, client idiosyncrasies, and demands; and, the fact that event management is hard work was perceived negatively by some students and as flaws with the university and client organizations. The findings precipitated changes to how students are supported on live event projects and to the collaborative relationships between clients and the university. © Cognizant, LLC.

The spirit of entrepreneurship must be formed in an integrated process in learning so that commitment, responsibility and work ethic on the candidate of vocational high school graduates are effectively promoted. Learning teaching factory teaches students how to find problems, build prototypes, learn to make business plan, and learn to present their own solutions. The research objective is to assess the effectiveness of teaching Factory implementation in improving the competence and skills of students in the field of entrepreneurship. The method used in this research is case study. Key informants were determined purposively in charge of teaching factory, students, and teachers who teach in productive subject. The results achieved in this study are: 1) culinary and hospitality units are the most active groups in producing products for teaching factory, 2) the role of entrepreneurial groups in each unit of production in order to increase productivity 3) students earn revenues of teaching factory and production unit get percentage of product or service sales, 3) the role of each production unit determines the level of teaching factory effectiveness. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

teaching entrepreneurial skills to third level students is be- coming increasingly recognised as a necessary skill for them to thrive in the 21st century. Across the E.U. and globally, the teaching of en- trepreneurial skills is progressively being incorporated into the core syl- labus that students take during their time in third level education. How- ever, despite the efforts of policy makers and educators, entrepreneurship is still not widespread among graduates. This paper discusses the impact on student attitudes toward entrepreneur- ship of an E.U. intensive programme (called WalkAbout) that has run for the past two years. In the first year, 28% of the projects were devel- oped further at the request of external stake holders. In the second year, 40% of the projects were developed further. In this paper we discuss the reasons as to why this programme is so successful in motivating students to further develop their projects in an entrepreneurial fashion. © 2018 CEUR-WS. Due to tremendous worldwide changes, the entrepreneurial imperative demands innovation. Therefore, companies as well as employees require innovative thinking and acting skills to cope with modern challenges. Opportunity Recognition represents the starting point for such entrepreneurial endeavours. Hence, this paper focuses on modelling Opportunity Recognition as well as the development of an Opportunity Recognition competence model as the foundation for teaching and learning in vocational education. Building on vocational situations that trigger innovations (opportunities) and the necessary competence facets that are needed to apply competent vocational behaviour in such situations (Opportunity Recognition), we conduct a systematic literature review and develop a comprehensive Opportunity Recognition competence model. We thereby link the found vocational situations (opportunities) with the found more abstract and latent competence facets of Opportunity Recognition and operationalise them by more observable indicators, which can be construed as evidence for the latent construct and related to successful performance in associated vocational situations. This modelling procedure of “evidence-based reasoning” allows inferences from the observed behaviour to the underlying, although not directly observable, Opportunity Recognition competence. The resulting Opportunity Recognition competence model may serve as a foundation for developing evidence-based curricular goals for vocational education through both instruction and assessment. © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

High Quality Vocational education is one way to create skilled and professional human resources. In the implementation of teaching and learning process there are many components that are very important one of them is the educator (teacher), where through the quality of teachers materials are expected to be well absorbed by students. Teachers generally consist of male and female teachers where in this era of teacher globalization teachers in vocational schools are not only dominated by male teachers, there are many women who serve as educators in unlimited vocational schools by selected majors. But the polemic is the issue of gender inequality that has been the subject of talks in various countries since 1979. Gender bias in education is the educational reality that benefits certain sexes, leading to gender inequality in which various forms of gender inequality occur in different regions. Female teachers in technology and engineering as a minority are deemed incompetent in understanding vocational materials and are deemed less able in the application of school practices than male teachers. But at this point it can be observed that the large number of female teachers who enter the world of teaching skills in vocational schools in Indonesia. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out the extent of gender differences in the influence of teaching styles on the learning process in SMK with the concentration of technique and technique. Project-based learning is a learning method that uses project activities as the core of learning and requires student creativity in completing the project. The aims of this study is to investigate the influence of project-based learning methods on students with a high level of creativity in learning the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). This study used experimental methods with experimental class and control class consisting of 24 students, with 12 students of high creativity and 12 students of low creativity. The application of project-based learning methods into the PLC courses combined with the level of student creativity enables the students to be directly involved in the work of the PLC project which gives them experience in utilizing PLCs for the benefit of the industry. Therefore, it's concluded that project-based learning method is one of the superior learning methods to apply on highly creative students to PLC courses. This method can be used as an effort to improve student learning outcomes and student creativity as well as to educate prospective teachers to become reliable educators in theory and practice which will be tasked to create qualified human resources candidates in order to meet future industry needs. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the expectations and reality perspectives accrued in a preliminary management course and understand if they impart and embed real-world skills and develop work readiness. Design/methodology/approach: Primary data collected for the research were qualitative. A total of six focus groups were conducted with a total of 52 students enrolled at a large metropolitan university in Australia. NViVO was used to code and analyse the data. Findings: The study found that at the commencement of university studies, the expectations were simple like, making new friends, getting around the campus and settling well into the university culture, which over time extended to getting a part-time job, securing internships, memberships of associations, desire to participate in exchange programs and get work-ready by the close of the first year. The research outcomes show that those who held a part-time job while studying demonstrated a better understanding of the preliminary management subject matter taught in class and obtained better grades. Primarily, the preliminary management course did not specifically impart work-ready skills and it would be fitting to embed employability skills in the management curriculum from the commencement of their programs in the first year. Research limitations/implications: Qualitative research is used to comprehend a research problem from the outlook perspectives of the local population it involves. The limitations of this methodology includes no objectively verifiable result, adept interviewing skills for interviewers, slow and time consuming during interviewing process and intensive category process also as qualitative inquiry is normally open-ended, the participants have more control over the content of the data collected. Practical implications: The lack of skill mismatch and graduates who are not work-ready incurs significant economic and social costs. A number of policy implications emerge due to university-labour market links and skills mismatches and the impact on students and the labour market. The rise in unemployment and the skills mismatch seen after the economic crisis requires immediate attention. Job creation is crucial but so is the need to develop graduate with appropriate matching skills and qualities to do the job. Mandatory internships, apprenticeships and on-the-job training for university students would help. Governments can provide financial incentives and subsidies to organisations providing the above services and working cooperatively with the universities to get students work-ready. Universities must raise the educational requirements over time as jobs become more complex. Universities can build communities of practice with the assistance of this scheme to enable students to interact with the industry professionals. An additional year of vocational training could be recommended for the graduating students. This would help the young graduates to get work-related skills. Wheelahan et al. (2015) state that building better links between education and work can help provide a more rational approach to vocational development. They propose the use of vocational streams and productive capabilities in the education system and labour market to achieve this. Social implications: This requires a combined effort from all stakeholders. A systematic approach needs to be adopted. First, the gap between the knowledge provided by the universities and the skills required by the employers need to be reduced. Second, the employers and the universities should keep a watch on the labour market and develop strategies to meet the dynamic requirements of the labour market collaboratively. Third, career guidance will help inform students make a career choice to match the labour market opportunities. This should be a part of the policy agenda for responding to the lack of work-ready graduates in the labour market. Originality/value: Learning and teaching activities must include industry interface and engagement right from the first year at university. The main findings from this research indicated the need for better understanding of first-year students’ expectations. The two significant student expectations that emerged were “need for collaborations” and “industry interface”. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Vocational High Schools as one of the educational institutions that has the responsibility in preparing skilled labors has a challenge to improve the quality of human resources as a candidate for skilled labors, to compete and survive in a changing climate of work. BPS noted an increase in the number of non-worker population (BAK) in 2015-2017 on vocational graduates as many as 564,272 people. The ability to adapt and maintain jobs in a variety of conditions is called employability skills. This study purpose to measure the development of employability skills of communication skills, problem-solving skills and teamwork skills on the implementation of teaching factory learning in SMK Negeri 1 Cibadak, THPH Skills Program on bakery competency. This research uses mixed method, with concurrent triangulation mix methods research design. Data collection techniques used interviews and questionnaires. The result shows that there are increasing students' employability skills in communication skills, problem solving skills, and teamwork skills in teaching factory learning. Principles of learning that apply learning by doing student centering and learning arrangements such as situations and conditions in the workplace have an impact on improving student employability skills. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The complexity of the system of organization and carrying out of teaching internship for students of pedagogical higher education institutions, caused by a large number of subjects of practice and numerous parameters for assessing the level of training of trainee students, requires scientific justification of the applied approaches. The article presents a "Roadmap for teaching internship", which includes the kinds of activities of all subjects of practice, as well as the tools for the implementation of current and midpoint assessment of the activities of students fulfilling the professional tasks of practice. The results of the pedagogical experiment confirmed the validity of the applied approaches and the developed models, and also pointed out the directions for improving the professional training of students. The system of organizing and carrying out a practice developed on the basis of modern approaches is novel and has a great practical importance. Its implementation will ensure a high level of professional training for future teachers. © 2018.
