Engagement in post-compulsory education is a means by which resettled refugees can gain social and economic mobility. Given the importance of education in shaping the futures of both individuals and societies, understanding the challenges facing students from refugee backgrounds and those involved in their education constitutes an important area of research. While such issues have received attention in primary and secondary school contexts, very little research has addressed these issues in higher education. This chapter examines the educational experiences and challenges associated with the transition to university for African youth from refugee backgrounds. It presents the perspectives of educators, social service providers, African students and African community leaders who participated in a qualitative investigation of the education and career pathways of African youth from refugee backgrounds. The chapter invites academics to reflect upon their experiences and challenges in teaching these students and to consider their own professional development needs with a view to better supporting these students. Recommendations are offered in an effort to identify key areas of support for academics and students in higher education. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018. teaching factory (TEFA) is an Indonesian government program that integrates work experience into the school curriculum. All equipment, materials and educational actors are designed to carry out the production process to produce products (goods or services). teaching factory (TEFA) is a combination of production-based learning and competency learning. In production-based learning, students are directly involved in the production process, so that the needs of production build their competence. Production capacity and product type become the main key of successful implementation of learning.In a teaching factory, the school carries out production activities or services that are part of the teaching and Learning Process. Thus, the school is required to have a factory, workshop or other business unit for TEFA learning activities. The legal bases for the implementation of teaching Factory are: Law Number 20 Year 2003 (Sisdiknas), Elucidation of Article 15 (Vocational Education prepares learners primarily to work in certain fields); Government Regulation Number 19 Year 2005 (SPN), Article 26 (Vocational Secondary Education Unit aims to improve intelligence, knowledge, personality, noble religius, and skills to live independently and follow further education in accordance with the vocational); and Education Priorities 2010-2014 (INPRES No. 1 of 2010: Improved access to quality education, affordable, relevant, and efficient toward uplifting people's welfare, independence, noble character, and strong character of the nation). The education sector is developed to achieve economic growth that is supported through the harmonisation of the availability of educated personnel and the ability to create employment or entrepreneurship, to answer the challenges of labour needs. From the Presidential Decree 2014 on function and organization, Kemdikbud SMK built a teaching Factory and technopark SMK environment with the latest technology.The purpose of preparing graduates of vocational schools to become workers and entrepreneurs is to: help students choose the work field in accordance with their competence; grow the creativity of students through learning by doing; provide skills needed in the work world; and extend the scope of recruitment opportunities for SMK graduates. We must determine the right way to achieve these goals. The right way to do this is to improve the quality of education. The quality or quality of education cannot be separated from the teaching and learning process conducted in the classroom by the teachers. A good learning process will be reflected through a good and appropriate learning model. How can a teacher choose a good and appropriate learning model that is in line with the goals of TEFA?The current curriculum used by schools is the 2013 curriculum that employs either an inquiry based-learning model, discovery learning model, project-based learning, or problem-based learning. The four models of learning above are not done completely by the teachers in the classroom. It is necessary to determine the appropriate learning model for teachers to be able to implement it well in the field, because it is the teachers who will be spearheading TEFA program implementation. One of the major teaching obstacles to implementing TEFA in education is the lack of teachers who can apply appropriate learning models. According to Aggarwal (1998), universally issued ICT e can facilitate the teaching learning process but it cannot replace the traditional system of teaching -learning. The teaching -learning activities, which are varied and complex, must be harmonized. So, it is very important that an up to date professional teacher integrates the various elements of the teaching -learning situation, and more importantly should be brought into an intelligible whole. © © 2018 International Business Information Management Association (IBIMA).

In the paper it is discussed what skilled workers need for participation on sustainable development of food technology in countries of Central Asia. For this the skilled workers must be empowered not only to understand the world of work and to “operate” the technical systems but also to question and optimise them continuously. This must be reflected in the didactic set-up of vocational teaching -learning processes. In the article an approach of vocational learning which is focused on real working tasks is described. Educational institutions are fundamentally designed for teaching and learning, whereas learning in workplaces remains a secondary function supported through engagement in routine and nonroutine work tasks, direct and indirect guidance and opportunities and accessibility to a range of work tasks to gain experience (Billett, Stud Contin Educ 23(1):19–35, 2001). Development of skilled workers demands that learning at educational institutions and in workplaces is well connected and integrated. Without deliberate efforts from teachers, guides, mentors or other actors to make connections between learning at different sites, students could likely remain ‘passive bystanders’ during scheduled practice periods in workplaces. It therefore becomes necessary to develop learners’ capacities to help mediate between the curriculum organised by their educational institutions and the curriculum situated in the everyday business of workplaces where they gain vocational experiences. Further to empowering learners to access and engage in learning, there are other considerations necessary for effective integration of learning in different sites. In this chapter we draw on the cases presented in Part II to propose broad considerations for integration around four imperatives: social-cultural arrangements, negotiated curriculum, the roles of stakeholders and learner preparedness. Imperatives and implications for students’ learning are discussed. In the summary of the chapter, we recapitulate the main ideas about supporting integration of learning in educational institutions and workplaces and stress the significance of a collective and reciprocal approach for integration. © 2018, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This position paper discusses on-going academic remediation challenges within the field of medical education. More specifically, we identify three common contemporary problems and propose four recommendations to strengthen remediation efforts. Selecting or determining what type of remediation is needed for a particular student is akin to analyzing a Gordian knot with individual, institutional and systemic contributors. More emphasis, including multi-institutional projects and research funding is needed. Recommendations regarding language use and marketing of such programs are given. © 2018 The Author(s).

The awareness of higher education institution of the need for the balance between students' soft skills and hard skills encourages Bina Nusantara University to implement 3+1 curriculum. The goal is for students to not only study in the class for three years but also had the opportunity to involve in the community through an internship. Thus, the learning outcome for one year in the world of work can be input to the learning process in the classroom. This research was qualitative-based that involved four important evaluations, notably the program, process, output, and impact. Data collection was conducted through interviews with twenty students of Chinese Literature Department who have completed an internship with companies from China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia. The results exhibited that the applied curriculum can improve their hard skills and soft skills. So, they are motivated to adapt in learning and work. From evaluation results, the classroom learning needs to be balanced with the outside class learning or distance learning as learning outcomes are more effective. Moreover, students are able to learn independently by completing the online assignment given by the teacher during the internship. © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery.

Introduction. The method of project-based learning has recently gained the great popularity. However, the adoption of project-based learning into the educational process and its theoretical comprehension have been affected to some extent by a phenomenon such as fashion, therefore, there has been misunderstanding on the part of this method potential among the research and teaching staff. The possible disappointment in its results, where there are reasons to doubt its effectiveness, can cause a backlash and retard its application. The reassessment of its results, in turn, can cause a backlash and retard its methodological and methodical tools application that has a really high potential. The aims of the study are the following: to define and analyse insufficiently highlighted problematic aspects of the project-based learning in scientific publications; to justify the need for a differentiated approach to its use. Methodology and research methods. The study methodology is based on the system-based and practice-oriented approaches; the methods of experiment, description, comparison, structural and comparative analyses of empirical data were applied. Results and scientific novelty. The author describes the long-term teaching experience based on the project method while training the students of the system of higher and secondary professional education mastering the technologies of a promotional video production. The virtues and shortcomings of this method, favorable conditions for its realization are considered; a number of the methodical recommendations that enable to increase its effectiveness are given; typical mistakes which are made when introducing similar training are noted. The use of the project method brings closer the process of the specialists' training to real professional activity; removes a problem of restriction of school hours; gives opportunities of peer learning of students and acquisition of the program of courses by them at individual speed; significantly stimulates educational motivation of students and promotes growth of their professional competence through the well-advised organization of work on the project, its constant control and objective assessment by independent experts of a final design product. The use of the project-based learning method is not universally effective. It contributes more to the development of the abilities of more gifted students, but can negatively affect the progress of poorly motivated students. Projects can be realized within the framework of one studied discipline, if its content and structure create conditions for this. In other cases, it will require a substantial restructuring of the educational process, careful prediction of its final results, change of approaches to teaching all disciplines, and accordance of the educational curricula to design technologies. Practical significance. The publication materials can be used by the teachers, methodologists and administrative workers of the system of professional education interested in the efficient and rational organization of educational process and the choice of the most productive methods, means and forms of vocational training of future experts. © 2018 Obrazovanie i Nauka. This research focuses on the usage of mobile learning among Grade 9 students and adopts the structure of a closed-ended and a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. There are thirty respondents from Mahaphabkajadthong Autpatam School. The questionnaires are randomly assigned to students. The results indicate: 1) most of the Grade 9 students are satisfied with mobile learning in terms of appropriate content (Mean = 4.70, S.D. = 0.65) 2) the students have benefited from the use of mobile learning in terms of the sound aspect, especially the appropriateness of the song used in the lesson (Mean = 4.03, S.D. =0.89), and 3) the students are satisfied that the lesson could be reviewed at any time (Mean = 4.33, S.D. =0.66), so teachers and schools should put more energy and effort into developing the mobile learning content. © 2018 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

How comprehensively learners make connections between what is taught in educational institutions and in the workplace has significance for developing competencies as productive workers. However, connectivity of learning in the two sites has been problematic for some time (Akkerman SF, Bakker A, Vocat Learn, 5:153–173, 2012; Fuller and Unwin 2011). Sappa and Aprea (Vocat Learn, 7(3):263–287, 2014) contend that shared conceptions of connectivity by key stakeholders such as learners (students/apprentices/workers), teachers, managers, supervisors, trainers and training coordinators lead to better outcomes for work-integrated learning. This chapter reports on the findings from an Australian case study on how vocational education and training (VET) students, teachers and managers/coordinators conceptualise connectivity between what is learnt in educational institutions and workplaces. The study focused on two main questions: (i) How do key actors in the Australian VET system (VET students, teachers, trainers and managers/coordinators of training) conceptualise vocational learning and teaching across VET institutions and workplaces? (ii) What are the implications of their conceptions for connectivity of the VET curriculum? Participants engaged in semi-structured interviews. teaching programming novices in secondary education is often described as a challenge, because student groups are often quite heterogeneous. Teachers react with special methods e.g. with individualized teaching , group work or project-based learning. As such a method for computer science education, that supports project-based learning agile projects are being discussed more recently. In the context of a design-based research work, experienced teachers have adapted and applied a theory-derived agile model in a wide range of contexts. In this qualitative case-study, we analyze 11 interviews with 6 teachers on their observations from 20 agile projects with over 400 students. The aim is to gain insight into how agile practices assist individual learning processes and how they help teachers to design and organize projects in order to support students individually. A structured content analysis shows that agile teams face similar obstacles as teams in plandriven projects, but that they can overcome them better in agile projects. Additionally, the analysis indicates that in agile projects the quantity and quality of interactions increases, which has positive effects on the construction of sustainable skills and that students furthermore are frequently involved in feedback processes and reflections, which makes their learning more goal-oriented. Moreover, the data shows that teachers can identify their students' strengths and weaknesses better and also observe their individual learning processes better throughout agile project. Based on that knowledge they can design their agile project in a way that each student is challenged systematically and purposefully. © 2018 IEEE.
