Can the arts enhance postgraduate GP training?

The value of arts-based medical education is becoming increasingly well established in undergraduate curricula. However, little is known about its value, and acceptability, to qualified doctors undertaking postgraduate training. In this work we examined GP trainees’ views on whether arts-based education was useful for their professional development and, if so, what they perceived its value to be. All first and second year GP trainees on the Dorset Vocational Training Scheme attended a one day course which showcased how the arts (film, poetry, painting, photography, theatre) could enhance their professional development as doctors. GP trainees rated the day as interesting, enjoyable and thought proving. The majority felt that the arts could contribute to making them more competent and humane doctors. Following this, we ran a mandatory six months arts based course for six GP trainees, and evaluated their feedback through qualitative analysis of a focus group discussion. Overall, GP trainees found the course enjoyable and valuable to their learning. It not only gave them a deeper appreciation of the patient’s perspective, but also encouraged them to think about their own health and wellbeing. © 2020, © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Analyzing the relevance of peer relationship, learning motivation, and learning effectiveness-design students as an example

In a design department's practice course there are often group exercises that include intensive interactions between students in the classroom or in the internship factory. In addition, students will deepen the interaction between peers due to course groupings or borrowing of model tools, etc. This study intended to carry out a differential analysis and discussion of the differences among design students from different backgrounds under the three factors of peer relationships, learning motivation, and learning effectiveness. The research method was based on literature analysis and a questionnaire survey, and the research objects were sophomores and seniors in four classes. Statistical analysis methods included the independent sample T-test, one-way ANOVA, and factor and cluster analysis, which were used to summarize different learning styles. The results showed that the students had significant differences of varying degrees in the three factor dimensions. Regarding gender, "care about classmates' lives" in peer relationships scored higher for the females than the males, and the rest had no effect. Regarding educational system, "care about the classmates' life" and "sharing life trivia" was included in peer relationships. "keep the enthusiasm in the course of learning" was included in the learning motivation. "recognition for self-directed learning" and "ability improvement" was included in learning effectiveness. The three factors all had significant differences, and the differences for full-time students were higher than for night school students. Regarding grade, there were significant differences in "friends will value my comments" and "sharing life trivia" in peer relationships, "understand course content" in learning motivation, and "data collection ability" and "understanding team member expertise" in learning effectiveness, and seniors scored higher than sophomores in these areas. In addition, the ANOVA and post-hoc tests revealed significant differences in learning the processes between different groups. In peer relationships, full-time seniors scored higher than the other groups; in learning motivation and learning effectiveness, full-time seniors scored higher than night school sophomores. In addition, the overall factors of the full-time seniors were higher than those of the other groups. In the analysis of different learning factors, under the premise of the variation of 58.975%, three factors were extracted by principal axis for analysis with Promax rotation. The different learning factors can be summarized in "emphasizing ability improvement", "care about peer friendship", and "careful and active learning". Classification of learning styles under the three factor dimensions was based on two-stage cluster analysis to obtain two clustering results, including "enthusiastic and friendly" and "active and autonomous". The results showed that the mastery of self-learning time and the learning experience performance have a key influence on the learning motivation and learning effectiveness of design students from different backgrounds. In addition, the results also showed a new opportunity for course improvement and teaching innovation at night schools. The final results of this study could be used as an important reference for research on peer relationships, learning motivation, and learning effectiveness in design education. © 2020 by the authors.

Flipped classroom improves nursing students’ theoretical learning in China: A meta-analysis

Objective At present, current didactic teaching delivery method help nursing students apply theory to clinical situations in an inefficient way. The flipped classroom (FC), a novel teaching mode emphasizing self-study and critical thinking, has generated interest in nursing education in China. However, there are a gap in the literature and no consistent outcomes of current studies which compared FC and lecture-based learning (LBL), and no systematic review has comprehensively compared theoretical scores as an affected outcome in FC versus LBL modes. Methods In this review, we analyze flipped-learning nursing students’ scores, and aim to assess the efficacy and provide a deeper understanding of the FC in nursing education. Following the inclusion criteria, articles were obtained by searching PubMed, Embase and Chinese data, including the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, and VIP database until 3 January 2020. Data were extracted from eligible articles and quality was assessed. A meta-analysis was then performed using a random effects model with a standardized mean value (SMD) and a 95% confidence interval (CI).32 studies were included after reviewing 2,439 citations. All studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The FC theoretical knowledge scores in FC were significantly positively affected compared to those of the traditional classroom (SMD = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.02–1.64; P < 0.001). In addition, 23 studies reported skill scores, indicating significant difference between the FC mode and LBL mode (SMD = 1.58, 95%CI: 1.23–1.93; P < 0.001). Conclusions The results of this meta-analysis suggest that compared to the LBL teaching method, the FC mode dose significantly improve Chinese nursing students’ theoretical scores. However, the problems of heterogeneity and publication bias in this study need to be remedied high-quality future studies. © 2020 Li et al. Qualitative research skills acquisition within social work doctoral education using project-based learning

The future of social work research relies on the intellect and competence of current doctoral students. These future scholars who receive doctoral education that values qualitative inquiry will create a system where qualitative research traditions receive the same privilege as quantitative research traditions. Project-based learning provides learning opportunities that can challenge assumptions about what academia considers “real” research. This descriptive qualitative study explored key attributes of using project-based learning within two consecutive social work doctoral courses to encourage qualitative research skill development. Students and instructors participated in ideawriting and focus groups to assess the usefulness of PBL within these courses. The findings suggested that PBL may be useful for deepening knowledge about qualitative inquiry and reducing epistemological unconsciousness. © The Author(s) 2019.

Applying educational theory to develop a framework to support the delivery of experiential entrepreneurship education

Purpose: Experiential approaches have become increasingly common in entrepreneurship education in response to calls for different approaches to the traditional didactic process-driven approach. Experiential approaches offer the potential to develop the skills and mindset that are required in entrepreneurship. Research has highlighted the critical importance of educator pedagogical competence in the delivery and quality of teaching and learning in further and higher education. Nevertheless, educator narratives and practices are often based on foundations that suggest a lack in the depth of knowledge and understanding of the underlying pedagogic learning theories and practice. This paper brings educational theory and pedagogic practice together in a three-stage framework of the experiential entrepreneurship learning process to support entrepreneurship educators within further and higher education. Design/methodology/approach: This paper reviews and brings together the seminal educational theories and philosophies of constructivism, objectivism, Kolb's (1984) theory of experiential learning, Schön's (1983) reflection-in-action and Mezirow's (1997) theory of transformative learning, to develop a framework which underpins the experiential entrepreneurship learning process. Findings: This paper develops a three-stage framework which informs the roles of an educator and a learner in experiential entrepreneurship education within further and higher education, based on educational theories and philosophies that inform the learning process. Practical implications: The developed framework supports the pedagogic competence of educators in the delivery of experiential entrepreneurship education through a deeper understanding of the supporting theory that informs the pedagogic practice. This will provide consolidation to enable educators to maximise the effectiveness of their educational practice (Kaynardağ, 2019) and can increase the legitimacy of entrepreneurship education (Foliard et al., 2018). Originality/value: This paper meets calls in the literature to provide a closer engagement between educational theory and pedagogic practice to afford guidance as to how educators can navigate some of the different educational theories and philosophies to consolidate the effective delivery of quality experiential entrepreneurship education. Applying seminal educational theories and philosophies to ensure the quality of experiential education can support the legitimacy of experiential entrepreneurship education. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Stuck in the GeM Jam: An action research on how practical training outcomes are related to training intentions

In this chapter, the researchers present the results of the action research project. The GeM (Future General Manager) Program is a specifically-designed training program for outstanding students in the hospitality school to gain specific deep-grounded work experiences in several hotels in Klang Valley, Malaysia. This study used the action research approach to understand the quality of today's industrial training programs. Four final-year undergraduate students from the hospitality school reflected on their training experiences and provided feedback on how the GeM Program can be further developed to enhance the learning outcomes for future training participants. This chapter helps to understand how to develop, design, implement, and monitor a successfully structured training program for the future of the hospitality industry. With this, hotels can acquire the best student trainees who will further their career as employees with them. © 2021, IGI Global.

The problem-based learning approach towards developing soft skills: A systematic review

In this paper, we review systematically the role of problem-based learning (PBL) in developing soft skills in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and other fields of studies. The Systematic Literature Review (SLR) includes the most recent empirical, review, and conceptual studies from TVET and other multiple fields of studies including medicine, humanities, and engineering between the years of 2001 and 2016 collected from four databases. A qualitative method was used to accomplish the systematic review. After the collection of articles, the selected studies were analyzed through thematic analysis. From this review, we concluded that PBL as an instructional approach has a significant role in the development of soft skills among students of various disciplines including TVET; empirical evidence is predominantly conclusive in identifying the acquisitions of various soft skills including communication skills, conflict resolution skills, leadership skills, and interpersonal skills, and finally, several factors might influence the relationship of PBL and soft skills such as duration and process of PBL instruction, role of facilitator, and awareness and training of learners. Moreover, there are fewer number of empirical studies on the role and effects of PBL approach to developing soft skills in TVET. © 2020 Nova Southeastern University. All rights reserved.

By referring to the national vocational post skill standard, the school and the enterprise cooperate deeply, and the teachers and enterprise tutors jointly teach, and focus on the cultivation of students' post skills. With the exploration of 1 + X certificate system pilot project, Ningbo Vocational and technical college adopts the course mode based on enterprise working process and school enterprise cooperation to reform the course of "mechanical processing technology". A concept analysis of conceptual learning: A guide for educators

Background: Concept-based curricula, coupled with conceptual approach to teaching, fosters conceptual learning. There is a need for clarity in the definition of conceptual learning. Method: Walker and Avant’s method of concept analysis was used. Results: Conceptual learning is a process in which learners organize concept-relevant knowledge, skills, and attitudes to form logical cognitive connections resulting in assimilation, storage, retrieval, and transfer of concepts to applicable situations, familiar and unfamiliar. Attributes identified were (a) recognizing patterns in information, (b) forming linkages with concepts, (c) acquiring deeper understanding of concepts, (d) developing personal relevance, and (e) applying concepts to other situations. Antecedents were (a) learner cognitive potential, (b) organized conceptual framework, and (c) conceptual approach to teaching. Consequences were (a) enhanced synthesis and analysis, (b) improved problem solving, (c) ability to translate theory to practice, (d) appreciation of linear/nonlinear ways of thinking, and (e) enhanced concept construction. Conclusion: This analysis provides a referent for recognizing the occurrence of conceptual learning and developing instruments to measure its outcomes. © 2019, Slack Incorporated. Students' interactions: Using video data as a mean to identify competences addressed in learning factories

Müller-Frommeyer, Aymans, Bargmann, Kauffeld, & Herrmann, 2017). Two teams of four students each were videotaped for one semester during a research-based team project at a learning factory. The aim of this paper is to examine to what extent the competences identified in the competency model for students working with a learning factory by Müller-Frommeyer et al. (2017) are addressed in students' task-related group discussions. The recorded videos (12,807 sense units) were analyzed using a newly developed coding scheme (act4learning) which focuses on learning-related competences. Additionally, the students filled in questionnaires regarding their computer-related self-efficacy before and after the team project. Overall, all examined competences of the model were addressed in the students' discussions, but in varying extents. The video data shows that interactions are mainly related to professional as well as social competences and rarely related to self-competence. Differences - especially regarding the extent to which professional and social competences were addressed in the meetings - can be found between the two examined groups of students and in different learning settings. The results allow a deeper understanding of the competences students address in their team meetings in research-based projects with a learning factory, and therefore, the competences they can acquire while completing the project. The results further provide the opportunity to continue adapting competence-based teaching concepts at learning factories in higher education. © 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
