Transition of the higher education to the practically oriented educational programmes

Article Open Access
The study of the applied bachelor degree course is represented. It is exposed that in the Russian system of the tertiary education the qualified gap has been formed: in practice there is a lack of the educational servicing providers, who execute training of the specializations, uniting the acquisition of the practical skills and theoretical teaching. The European, Canadian and American examples are analysed. The research provides the comparative analysis of the target direction and the applied bachelor degree course. We concluded that in the conditions of the modern life the development of education, and rapid tempos of technology modernization, the top priority is given to the training of graduates, who possess the skills and abilities of the professional adaptation in the rapidly changing world. It is solved which model of education must be preferential today in order to be demanded and employed. The education becomes the means for the most adequate reflection of the market economy and the new society requirements. © 2015, Asian Social Science. All Rights Reserved.

The impact of university teacher training on prospective teachers' CK and PCK - A comparison between Austria and Germany

Article Open Access
Background: As teacher training plays a major role in the development of (prospective) teachers' knowledge, differences between the professional knowledge of prospective teachers at Austrian and German universities were examined in the current study. The teacher training systems of business and economic education in both countries differ substantially regarding structure and content. The German system consists of two consecutive phases with different foci (university education with an emphasis on theories and domain-specific knowledge, followed by school-based practical training with the objective of acquiring practical experience). Thus, in Germany, opportunities to learn (OTL) mainly cover domain-specific knowledge with less focus on didactics and teaching experience. In contrast, Austrian universities offer an integrated approach that combines the two phases (i.e., theoretical input and practical teaching experiences are closely linked) at the university level. Methods: A paper-and-pencil test was used to measure content knowledge (CK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in the domain of accounting of prospective teachers in Germany and Austria. The total sample consists of n = 1,401 prospective teachers from German and Austrian universities. Taking the structural differences in teacher education into account, differences in CK and PCK between German and Austrian prospective teachers were expected. Results and conclusions: Accordingly, the results show that the Austrian sample outperformed the German one. In addition, for both the German and the Austrian sample, university-based OTL in accounting had a crucial impact on the CK score. Concerning PCK, however, the situation is different: none of the university-based OTL had an impact on Austrian prospective teachers' PCK, and only small effects were found for the German sample. Possible reasons for the unexpected findings are discussed. © 2015 Fritsch et al.

Quality teaching and the capability approach: Evaluating the work and governance of women teachers in rural Sub-Saharan Africa

Book
This book provides an analytical exploration of the condition of teachers working in expanding school systems across the world, with a particular focus on the lives of women teachers in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing from award-winning research, it looks beyond the official portrayals of teachers' lives in order to better understand the reality of the contexts in which teachers live and work. Positioning Amartya Sen's capability approach at the heart of the study, each chapter considers documentary evidence alongside ethnographic research from rural, remote and under-resourced schools in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Sudan. Interweaving rich narratives from teachers in a variety of contexts, the book proposes a concept of professional capability and examines female teachers' agency to pursue and achieve this in their classrooms. This key examination challenges existing notions of 'quality education' and reveals insights into the broader purpose of schooling for rural communities. Quality teaching and the Capability Approach will be of value to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in education, particularly those concerned with gender, development and teaching, as well as educationalists and policy makers concerned with education and development. © 2015 A. A Qualitative Inquiry of the Roles, Responsibilities, and Relationships Within Work-Based Learning Supervision

Article
Although meaningful work experience and the support of caring adults are recognized as factors that promote positive youth development, research has given minimal attention to the role of the work-based learning (WBL) supervisor. Interviews with 12 supervisors, from work sites that were identified as successful by leaders from a Catholic high school known for its high-quality work-study program for low-income adolescents, reveal that the roles, responsibilities, and relationships of WBL supervisors are complex and multifaceted. Supervisors seek to balance the goal-directed demands of managing a productive workplace with a relational commitment to teaching and mentoring young people. The results are discussed in light of relational theories of working and youth mentoring. Implications are explored for strengthening the selection and preparation of WBL supervisors who strive to enhance the life chances for low-income students of color. © Curators of the University of Missouri 2014

An examination of university supervision in a physical education teacher education program

Article
The purpose of this descriptive study was to analyze university supervision from the perspective of student teachers (STs), and to examine postlesson conference discourse between STs and university supervisors (USs) to determine if STs perspectives on supervisory models aligned with what actually occurred. Determining STs expectations and desires regarding supervisory model preferences and then providing a forum for STs to comment on the actual university supervision that they experienced fills a void in the literature, as student voice pertaining to this area of university supervision is missing. Data were collected via ST opportunities to answer written questions before and after their capstone experience. A total of 80 postobservation conferences were audio-recorded, transcribed and inductively analyzed to determine conference discourse. Results determined that the 28 STs overwhelmingly (96%) expressed a preference for a collaborative supervision approach, which ultimately they declared they experienced. Word counts revealed that for all postobservation conferences, STs (58%) spoke more often than USs (42%), which suggests that a collaborative model of supervision did actually occur. Analysis of idea units demonstrated that USs asked a lot of questions (31% of all their idea units) and a majority of them (73%) were categorized as higher order-such as reflective or evaluative questions versus lower order questions such as informational questions. This led to a great deal of ST reflection on their lessons during the postobservation conferences. © 2015 Human Kinetics, Inc.

How preservice teachers perform in teaching events regarding generic teaching and learning components

Article
This study focuses on the assessment of educational-psychological teacher competencies regarding generic teaching and learning (TL) components in initial university-based teacher education. Based on the approximations-of-practice (AoP) framework, simulated teaching events (M-Teach) with different formats (tutoring, small group) were developed. In a validation study, it was asked to what extent preservice teachers show teaching skills discriminating students in their teaching quality. Furthermore, the relationship between performances in different M-Teach formats was investigated and compared with teaching in real classrooms. Finally, how preservice teachers experience teaching in M-Teach events and how their subjective experience is related to their performance was analyzed. As a sample, a full cohort of preservice teachers in the fifth semester of a Bachelor teacher education program in Germany (N = 89) participated. All participants taught two M-Teach formats of tutoring and small group teaching based on a standardized instruction and research design procedure. Video analysis of M-Teach event performance revealed that preservice teachers show relevant teaching skills with variations in teaching quality. The performance scores show a quite high stability between different formats (tutoring, small group) and are systematically related to performance in classroom teaching. Participants judge self-efficacy as high and the challenge of implementation as medium to low. The findings indicate that M-Teach events show a high fidelity for formative assessment purposes and can be used in further studies as measures for assessing the acquisition of relevant teaching skills in the area of educationalpsychological competencies. © Hogrefe Verlag, Göttingen 2015.

Exploring the effects of student-centered project-based learning with initiation on students' computing skills: A quasi-experimental study of digital storytelling

Article
This study investigated, via quasi-experiments, the effects of student-centered project-based learning with initiation (SPBL with Initiation) on the development of students' computing skills. In this study, 96 elementary school students were selected from four class sections taking a course titled "Digital Storytelling" and were assigned to the following four groups: SPBL with Initiation group (G1, n = 20), SPBL group (G2, n = 31), PBL group (G3, n = 24), and Traditional group (G4, n = 21). Students had to design digital materials for digital storytelling. The researchers collected both quantitative and qualitative data, including conducting interviews with students and using teachers' journals. Based on the analysis in this study, the effect of SPBL with Initiation on students' computing skills was significantly higher than for those without or with other treatments. This research provides an innovative design and illustration of SPBL with Initiation for teachers, educators, and schools that are keen to enhance students' computing skills. © © 2015, IGI Global.

The effects of reflective thinking-based teaching activities on pre-service teachers’ reflective thinking skills, critical thinking skills, democratic attitudes, and academic achievement

Article
The purpose of the present paper is to elicit the effects of reflective thinking-based teaching activities on pre-service teachers’ reflective thinking skills, critical thinking skills, democratic attitudes, and academic achievement. The paper employed experimental design. The study group consisted of second year students from the Education Faculty of Gazi University in the 2010-2011 academic year. In total, 42 students (21 experimental; 21 control) were selected. Data were collected from:1) California Critical Thinking Scale, 2) Democratic Attitudes Scale, 3) Academic Achievement Test, 4) Reflective Thinking Tendency Scale for Teachers and Pre-service Teachers, 5) Reflective Journal, and 6) Rubric for portfolio. Though the experimental group obtained higher post-test, achievement, reflective thinking, critical thinking, democratic attitude, and academic achievement mean scores than the control group, these differences were found to be statistically not significant. The students were able to perform the behaviors required by reflection-on-action and reflection-in-action processes to a great extent. © Kamla-Raj 2015.

PBL in the teaching of design in aeronautical engineering: Application and evolution of a consolidated methodology

Article
During the last few years of teaching the subject of Graphic Engineering, traditional teaching methods have been used based on lectures and solving any problems as they arose. In the opinion of the authors, this gave a rather compartmentalised overview of engineering design. Students were assessed solely by a final exam, the final mark only being slightly influenced by the exercises set throughout the course. Being aware of this deficiency and motivated by the large number of graduates absorbed by the industrial engineering sector, two different experiences were developed built around project-based learning (PBL). It was intended to introduce a consolidated method that would bring students closer to an environment that simulated the actual working conditions in the field of engineering design. This paper describes the evolution of the methodology proposed by the authors and the results achieved. The aim of the authors is not simply to establish a methodology that will serve as an integrative component between the different degrees but as a methodology that will forge cross-links between degree subjects and enable students to develop their work more fully and endow their vocational training with a wider scope. © 2015 TEMPUS Publications.

Managing clinical education through understanding key principles

Review
Background: Traditionally, a practicum facilitated the integration of on-campus learning and practical workplace training. Over the past 3 decades, an educative practicum has evolved that promotes clinical reasoning, including analytical and evaluative abilities, through reflective practice. Anecdotal evidence indicates that the delivery of clinical education within medical radiation science entry-level programs continues to vacillate between traditional practicums and the new reflective practicums. Purpose: To review the literature about clinical education within the medical radiation sciences and identify key principles for practitioners seeking to reflect upon and improve their approach to teaching and supporting students in the clinical environment. Methods: A search of 3 major journal databases, Internet searches, and hand searches of reference lists were conducted to identify literature about clinical education in the medical radiation sciences from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2012. Twenty-two studies were included in this review. Results The 5 key elements associated with clinical education include the clinical support model and quality, overcoming the theory-practice gap, learning outcomes and reliable and valid assessment, preparing and supporting students, and accommodating differing teaching and learning needs. Discussion Many factors influence the quality of clinical education, including the culture of the clinical environment and clinical leadership roles. Several approaches can help students bridge the theory-practice gap, including simulators, roleplaying activities, and reflective journals. In addition, clinical educators should use assessment strategies that objectively measure student progress, and they should be positive role models for their students. Conclusion: The successful clinical education of students in the medical radiation sciences depends upon the systems, structures, and people in the clinical environment. Clinical education is accomplished through the collaborative efforts of the clinical practitioner, the academic, and the student. Universities should include introductory material on clinical learning and teaching in their radiologic science curriculum. © 2015 American Society of Radiologic Technologists.
