Logic Programming in Primary School: Facing Computer Science at an Early Age

Conference paper
Logic Programming allows for the exploration and development of Computational Thinking skills. Those being abstraction, decomposition, pattern recognition, and generalisation, among others, which are fundamental for problem-solving. What is more, Logic Programming helps building up Logical Thinking skills, also distinguishing valid arguments from fallacies and contradictions, as well as establishing connections between arguments through reasoning, to name some. These practices are not only essential for the development of knowledge in STEM, but also in Computer Science disciplines. Recently, arguments have been standing in favour of the early integration of programming within compulsory education. The international scientific community is looking forward to researching and initiatives being deployed towards this direction. This article introduces Metagame -Metajuego-, a methodological proposal which integrates key aspects to facilitate the effective integration of Logic Programming in primary education through collaborative and gamifying strategies. Furthermore, concrete cases of games are presented which have been formulated thanks to applying the proposed methodological approach to different educational contexts. The narratives upon which these games are based, incorporate learning cores presented in the curricular school designs where they were implemented. © 2024 IEEE.

Model of Immersive Educational Instruments of Behavioral Analysis and Management in Distributed Educational Teams

Conference paper
Current work presents an attempt to model a process of comprehensive behavioral analysis of immersive educational tools to develop a clear method of their classification and application guidelines. The research question posed by current study is the following: 'What elements of immersive education tool are associated with the highest amount of student learning engagement?'. The hypothesis which we test to answer the research question is formulated as 'Salient elements of visual representation of immersive educational instrument are engaging most of respondents on pre-attentive processing stage'. Key aims of the study include development of a model of implementing immersive educational instruments into conventional educational setup and discussion along with analysis oriented on distributed educational environments. We developed a comprehensive study design allowing to perform behavioral experiments on reaction to stimuli which represent the core elements of immersive educational tools. Presenting a design of multimodal behavioral experiment including eye-tracking, facial expression analysis and biometrical data analysis we indicate key factors providing evidence of immersion effectiveness for various classes and types of educational instruments. The discussed component-based model not only serves as an organizational tool for establishing a digital infrastructure for innovative distributed universities but also offers a novel framework for understanding the underlying architecture of immersive educational tools. Furthermore, the behavioral study design presented in this article goes beyond conventional approaches by focusing on identifying the specific elements of immersive educational tools that lead to the highest levels of learner engagement, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying immersive learning experiences. The results of current study will be of interest to a wide range of educational institutions utilizing innovative educational techniques in their practice. © 2024 IEEE.

Dual Apprenticeship Training of Refugees: Potential for Integration and Securing Skilled Labour? The Importance of Companies’ Recruiting Problems and Digitalisation

Book chapter
Dual apprenticeship training is discussed as a promising strategy for the labour market integration of refugees. In this process, companies play a central role. In dependence of their regional and occupational situation, they themselves are faced with the problem of not finding apprentices for the training places they offer. Are companies with vacant VET positions more likely to train refugees than companies without vacant VET positions? And in which relationship does the apprenticeship training of refugees stay with the technological infrastructure of the company? Multivariate panel analysis of the BIBB-Establishment Panel on Training and Competence Development 2016 & 2017 expand the empirical evidence, existing up to 2018: The higher probability of VET-contracts between refugees and companies with vacant VET-positions than with companies without vacant VET-positions, suggests that companies, on the one side, recognize the potential of the additional group of applicants to fill hard-to-fill apprenticeship training places, and refugees, on the other side, take advantage of the higher chances of access to companies struggling to find apprentices. Regarding the technological infrastructure the analysis shows that it depends on the specific technologies, whether they foster or hinder the apprenticeship train ing of refugees. The article is based on the situation in Germany in the years 2015–2017. Results cannot be easily transferred to other periods (or countries), as the inte gration capacity of the dual apprenticeship training system depends heavily on factors such as the socio-economic characteristics of the immigrants considered at the time. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Research on the optimization of teaching strategy of virtual reality and augmented reality technology in the training of construction craftsmen personnel training

Article Open Access
The teaching forms of colleges and universities in the informationization era are diverse, and virtual reality and augmented reality technology appear in the field of teaching technology as a new type of teaching media and have become a hotspot of technology application in education and teaching. The article proposes a teaching strategy for training architectural talent through virtual reality and augmented reality technology. This article adopts the questionnaire survey method and correlation analysis on the architecture students of Zhengzhou University, which is divided into training class and ordinary class, and analyzes the data of three teaching strategy variables, namely, virtual experiment, virtual technology, and virtual training, in the training class, as well as the correlation between each variable. The results show that the overall competence is benign after the students enter the construction competence training, and the correlation coefficients of the training class in two different stages are between 0.6 and 1, and the variables are strongly correlated. Subsequently, a satisfaction survey on the effect of teaching strategies was conducted. The students were more satisfied with the teaching strategies and methods proposed in this paper. The proposed teaching strategies also improved the problem-solving ability of the students, such as the average score of the students in the cultivation class (M=5.346) was higher than the average score of the general class (M=4.264) and also improved the students’ ability to think innovatively in architecture, for example, the fluency of the students’ thinking was improved from stage 0.58 in Stage 1 to 1.23 in Stage 4, a significant improvement. © 2024 Lingyi Zhao, Bingyue Liu and Pu Ke, published by Sciendo.

The article presents an analysis of the organization of internship in educational programs of economic and financial direction on the example of higher agricultural education. In the course of the research we conducted at the theoretical level a review of modern approaches to the implementation of internship of economists and financiers in university education in various countries of the world. The empirical part contains the opinions of 1,297 students who took part in an online survey based on the results of internship at enterprises and organizations in the agro-industrial complex (AIC) economy in the South of Russia. The survey database was processed in the SPSS Statistics program (version 24). The movement towards professionalism in the activities of future economists and financiers of AIC through systematic internship is associated with increased attention to the main process, the economic support of which is carried out; the introduction of a section in internship related to testing the level of their own digital skills and familiarity with applied computer programs that are used in the practical activities of the agro-industrial organization (enterprise). Nowadays knowledge concerning ecology and environmental law in regulating the activities of agrarian enterprises is becoming important for the training of a modern economist in the agricultural sector. Thus, climate policy focuses on issues of economic assessment of carbon emissions. Future economists should not only know modern approaches and understand the process of environmental monitoring, but also possess the tools for such an assessment. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Becoming a Farmer: An Analysis of the Development of Vocational Subjects in Indigenous Educational Institutes During the Japanese Colonial Period

Article
Purpose The main purpose of this article is to analyze the development of vocational subjects in indigenous educational institutes during the Japanese colonial period and how it cooperated with the official industrial positioning of indigenous tribes. While traditional farming was passed down from one generation to the next, vocational subjects in educational institutes during the Japanese colonial period were school subjects. The difference between the two deserves in-depth analysis. Finally, this study seeks to understand the impact of Japanese-introduced agricultural practices in indigenous tribal societies. Main Theories or Conceptual Frameworks The analysis spans the entire Japanese colonial period, divided into periods based on the formulation and revision of the Educational Institute regulations. The regulations issued by the Educational Institute of Taiwan Governor’s Office were the 1908 “Education Standards for the Indigenous Children” and the 1928 and 1941 “Education Standards of Educational Institute”. The study examines the development process of vocational subjects through the lens of these Educational Institute regulations. Research Design/Methods/Participants This article employs a historical research approach. In addition to discussing the standards of Indigenous Educational Institutes across different periods, it is also supported by the analysis and discussion of relevant historical documents to understand the development process of vocational subjects of Indigenous Educational Institute. Research Findings or Conclusions From the early days of the Japanese occupation, the indigenous affairs were handled by the police. Under the policy of “managing indigenous peoples”, indigenous peoples education became part of the policy. The purpose of “managing indigenous peoples” was to train these peoples as citizens and farmers, as reflected in official policies. Agriculture become the official industry positioning for the indigenous tribes, and vocational subjects of Indigenous Education Institute was in line with the development of this industry had enabled graduates from educational institutes to engage in farming. In addition to vocational subjects at the educational institute, the government also provided industrial guidance to the tribes with the police station as the center. Together with the group relocation measures to the foothills, the tribes were allowed to enter an agricultural society. This type of agriculture was Japanese-style agriculture, which was acceptable to the indigenous peoples and could even replace traditional farming because it was more productive. The crop income from the internship park could reduce the burden of official education fees and help increase the enrollment rate of children in educational Institute, which reached 87.71% in 1942. Coupled with the Takasago tribe’s reservation measures promoted during the Showa period, each tribal household could be allocated farmland, making farming the main livelihood of the tribe. According to the statistics of the “Takasago people’s production annual report”, in terms of the harvest volume of food crops and income and savings, it could be inferred that the tribe had reached self-sufficiency. Theoretical or Practical Insights/Contributions/Recommendations Japan currently defines “vocational subjects” as subjects that focus on practical exercises. Currently, Taiwan’s middle schools offer “Life Science and Technology” curriculums, which also include practical teaching content. These two types of curriculums may appear to be similar: the former had the connotation of career preparation and employment consideration in Japanese colonial period, while the latter have the function of career trial; similar to the former, the class hours of the latter include internships to enhance skill. For the current “Life Science and Technology” curriculums in middle schools are to strengthen practical abilities, they can appropriately plan the time for internships and practical activities. Because the Indigenous Educational Institute had an internship park, it also arranged internship hours related to vocational subjects and not included in the curriculum. This is similar to the “self-made education” promoted in recent years. This is similar to the “self-made education” promoted in recent years. If the school’s self-made education and technology center appropriately plans the internship hours, it will improve the teaching effect. © 2024, Department of Education, National Taiwan Normal University. Relevance of Competency Based Education for Architectural Education in India

Article Open Access
Background: A holistic architectural education is the culmination of learning knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values, which eventually reflects in the quality of graduates. Even though different schools of thought have made various kinds of qualitative contributions towards the evolution of architectural education in India, it has largely been dominated by the quantitative and technical aspects of its regulating framework. Architects engage with the demanding contradictions between responsibilities of an ethical nature, the dynamic challenges of practice, and the intricacies of architectural imagination. The aesthetical and imaginative foundations of the field make it incumbent upon the architects to possess a balance of ecumenical proficiencies for accountability and personalization. The purpose of the study is to identify relevant attributes of Competency Based Education (CBE) that can be adopted for architectural education in India. Methods: This research follows a narrative review approach and a descriptive-analytic method to broadly understand the attributes of CBE and its potential relevance to architectural education in India. 323 articles were searched on various search strings based on their relevance to the inquiry. 76 documents written in English language were included and appraised through the Scale of the Assessment for Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) tool to avoid any risk of bias. The PRISMA 2020 checklist and flow diagram has been used to report the findings of this narrative review. Result: The study identifies eight critical parameters of CBE with respect to its definitions, origins, transitions, regulatory environment, characteristics, approaches and implications on teaching-learning, frameworks and models of assessment; and challenges, which makes a case for the relevance of CBE for architectural education in India, which hasn’t been explored yet. Conclusion: The broader expectations of ‘being competent’ can be addressed through a conscious adoption of strategies of relevant attributes of CBE which can encourage building attitudes and temperament for life-long learning. ©: © 2024 Kohale N et al.
