This study aimed to review the existing communication systems between the universities, placement providers, and students during the DVM final year work-based learning (WBL) program in Bangladesh. The intention was to identify what factors impact the effectiveness of the communication system and to explore ways to enhance communication to better support the program. A questionnaire was used to collect details about the WBL program and the communication systems from all universities in Bangladesh. The questionnaire was completed on paper at a meeting of the National Veterinary Dean Council and online with a member of each university's WBL coordination team. A summary of the current WBL programs in Bangladesh was produced. Focus group discussions were used to collect more detailed information about the communication systems and were held via Zoom with recent graduates (n = 16) and placement providers (n = 7). Effective means of communication between all stakeholders were identified as an initial letter, phone calls, and spot visits by teachers. However, the frequency of formal communication before and during placements was variable, and the ways of providing feedback on the communication systems were insufficient. These issues sometimes undermined the student learning experience. Suggestions for improvements included increased resourcing, greater use of online communication systems, and a national committee to oversee WBL. Other ways to motivate placement providers included a better honorarium and continuing education courses. The results suggest that existing communication systems for veterinary WBL in Bangladesh are not completely satisfactory. Measures are needed to improve communication to optimize the student learning experience and capitalize on the many benefits of the WBL program for all stakeholders.. © American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, 2024.

Background: Education providers teach numeracy to undergraduate nursing students using a diverse range of approaches. Proficiency in numeracy skills is critical for patient safety; however, alarmingly, the accuracy rate of calculations by both undergraduate nurses and RNs is reported to be low. Method: The literature search yielded 1,180 articles published between 1994 and 2022. The assessment of the studies was reported using the PRIMSA extension for Scoping Reviews. Results: Thirty-nine articles were included in the review. A diverse range of approaches were used to teach numeracy including learning theory, methods of calculation, learning environment, and examination aids. Conclusion: This review highlights the plethora of approaches for teaching numeracy within undergraduate nursing education. Internationally, there were limited studies on the most effective teaching approaches; therefore, developing a robust evidence-based numeracy framework would be beneficial to guide non-nursing instructors in teaching undergraduate nurses. © 2024 Slack Incorporated. Work safety is an important area of business activity, particularly in industries with the most dangerous risks, such as mining, construction and energy. The aim is to reduce the number of accidents and increase employee awareness of occupational hazards and the principles of safe working practices. One of the most important ways to increase employee awareness and consequently reduce accidents is through training. The effectiveness of training is contingent on proper planning, design and preparation. Design thinking directed towards the use of teaching methods and tools is crucial. Properly planned training is part of the sustainability of companies, which consequently results in higher work safety due to its high efficiency. This article reviews the most common training methods in the area of work safety and evaluates them qualitatively and quantitatively using SWOT and multi-criteria analyses. These analyses can provide important guidance in the selection of training methods, regardless of the business sector. Based on the results obtained, effective training methods included those involving students: active training methods with elements of discussion and gamification, augmented and virtual reality, demonstrations and simulations. However, the best training results can be achieved by combining a number of training methods, while maintaining the right balance to achieve the intended training objectives. This is particularly important in businesses with specific activities such as mining, construction or energy. © 2024 by the authors.

Exposure to the daily struggles of the most marginalised people in our society and the lack of access to justice which most South Africans have to endure, can foster a well-rounded understanding of how the law operates. This can give true meaning to the transformation of the legal profession."88 This article examined two distinct forms of community service listed in the new regulations: (a) those pertaining to candidate legal practitioners and (b) those for legal practitioners. In relation to the former, the key conclusions reached are that the eight hours per year prescribed for candidates' vocational training are woefully inadequate to make any meaningful impact on promoting access to justice or developing the skills of the candidate. In addition, the designated time does not create work opportunities. Thus, a totally different and greatly expanded community service for candidates is called for. In relation to the form of community service for legal practitioners, the 40 hours per annum are considered to be a positive development in so far as they are formalising a duty on legal practitioners to perform appropriate community service. While still subject to a number of uncertainties, such as how the standard of work will be appropriately monitored, the gazetting of this aspect of the regulations is welcomed. This article argued that despite it not being the norm in some European civil law systems, compulsory community service in South Africa, as in various other African jurisdictions, is appropriate. © 2024 Juta and Company Ltd. The modern apprenticeship system is an essential strategy for human resources development in China. It is the institutional carrier for training high-level technical and skilled talents. Based on the perspective of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), a survey of 495 first-year college students’ willingness and behavior to participate in modern apprenticeship in N vocational college in Jiangsu Province found that perceived benefits, prescriptive norms, exemplary norms, external conditions, and self-efficacy have significant positive effects on college students’ willingness to participate in modern apprenticeship. Behavioral willingness and external conditions have a significant positive impact on college students’ participation in modern apprenticeship. Situational factors have a significant positive moderating effect on college students’ willingness and behavior to participate in modern apprenticeship. For this reason, the article proposes the following actions to push on modern apprenticeship. We should establish a high-quality employment security mechanism to enhance the inherent attraction of modern apprenticeship, attach importance to career planning education to improve students’ self-cognition, pay attention to career cognition education to enhance students’ career development awareness, improve the modern apprenticeship “1+X” certificate system to enhance college students’ sense of academic achievement. © The Author(s) 2024.

Higher Education, Skills and Work-based Learning
(2024)
Purpose: This study aims to examine the effects of vocational training programs for people with disabilities on their income. Design/methodology/approach: It conducted a multinomial regression analysis of 10,469 survey responses from 31 provincial administrative areas in mainland China. Findings: It finds the following antecedents all influence the trainees’ self-reported income, including their perception of the quality of the program, the training subject, the degree of consistency between their current job and this subject, their employment sector, their motivation and access to training resources and the geographical location of the program. Research limitations/implications: The findings are not representative of people with disabilities across mainland China because the respondents were not randomly sampled. Practical implications: The findings suggest that to increase the income of people with disabilities, the training can be designed according to the needs of employers by teaching subjects relevant to the needs of the labor market, reaching out to motivated trainees and enhancing the quality of training. Training institutions, employers and governments are recommended to work together to integrate class-based learning with workplace-based learning and practices. More training resources can be devoted to the self-employed people with disabilities or those who operate in the informal sector and are in less-developed areas. Social implications: The improvement of employment opportunities and income of people with disabilities supports the safeguarding of their social economic rights and the building of an inclusive society. Originality/value: Few studies have empirically explored and explained the effects of vocational training programs on people with disabilities’ income. This article fills this gap by assessing the performance of China's vocational training programs funded by the Federation of Disabled Persons at all levels. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Employability is a set of key personal attributes and transferable and discipline-specific skills considered essential for effective workplace performance; however, there are numerous perspectives about employability and how to develop it in higher education. Definitions and measurements of employability are influenced by factors such as government policy, requirements of employers, discipline norms and structural barriers. In the context of the Special Issue: 20-year JUTLP Review, this structured narrative review aimed to explore and understand employability to inform higher education learning and teaching practice. Forty-six articles published in the Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice were included, set in the context of 45 review articles on employability sourced from Scopus and ERIC databases and other selected literature. Several definitions of employability drew on existing employability frameworks and researchers’ evolving conceptions of employability within their disciplinary contexts. We propose a composite definition of employability based on the findings from this review: Employability is lifelong, evolving and complex, requiring adaptability and capabilities including knowledge, skills and attributes to obtain sustainable employment and resolve work ambiguities in challenging globalised, sociocultural and economic contexts. Higher education teaching practices, curriculum and assessment develop employability by developing discipline-specific alongside transferable knowledge, skills, attitudes, literacies, competencies, capacities and capabilities relevant to potential workplaces and aligned with employability attributes. Student-centred experiential learning models such as work-integrated learning, internships, industry experience, problem-based learning and reflection promote employability. Higher education also should promote career development competencies to enable students to showcase their skills, experiences, and attributes to employers through e-portfolios. © by the authors.
