An exploration of the relationship between academic and experiential learning approaches in vocational education

Background. Research on individual learning approaches (or learning styles) is split in two traditions, one of which is biased towards academic learning, and the other towards learning from direct experience. Aims. In the reported study, the two traditions are linked by investigating the relationships between school-based (academic) and work-based (experiential) learning approaches of students in vocational education programs. Samples. Participants were 899 students of a Dutch school for secondary vocational education; 758 provided data on school-based learning, and 407 provided data on work-based learning, resulting in an overlap of 266 students from whom data were obtained on learning in both settings. Methods. learning approaches in school and work settings were measured with questionnaires. Using factor analysis and cluster analysis, items and students were grouped, both with respect to school- and work-based learning. Results. The study identified two academic learning dimensions (constructive learning and reproductive learning), and three experiential learning dimensions (analysis, initiative, and immersion). Construction and analysis were correlated positively, and reproduction and initiative negatively. Cluster analysis resulted in the identification of three school-based learning orientations and three work-based learning orientations. The relation between the two types of learning orientations, expressed in Cramér's V, appeared to be weak. Conclusions. It is concluded that learning approaches are relatively context specific, which implies that neither theoretical tradition can claim general applicability. © 2006 The British Psychological Society.

Constituting the workplace curriculum

This paper advances some bases for a workplace curriculum. These are premised on conceptions of curriculum as intents directed to individuals' progression towards full and effective workplace performance, yet whose enactment is shaped by workplace factors and is ultimately experienced by workers as learners. So whether the intentions will be realized is likely premised on the support (affordances) for their enactment by interests within the workplace. Workplace affordances, like those in educational institutions, emphasize the role that the norms and social practices that comprise workplaces play in regulating individuals' engagement in and learning through work. The degree to which these affordances invite, structure, support, and guide participation, and are likely to engage workers in the kinds of thinking, acting, and learning required for effective workplace performance, is important for developing effective vocational practice. The conception of an ideal curriculum directed towards full participation is subject to the affordances of the interests of managers, co-workers, and factors affecting production, as well as the intentionalities of worker-learners themselves. These concepts may well provide ways of thinking about curriculum more broadly as participatory practices.

Fostering integrative problem solving in biomedical engineering: The PBL approach

Problem-Based learning (PBL) has been instituted in the graduate and undergraduate curricula in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech. The basic learning unit of the PBL approach is the tutorial group, comprising six to eight students and a facilitator. The role of the facilitator is to asks probing questions at the process level with the intent of explicitly revealing group behaviors by drawing attention to student actions. The target areas for assessment of a PBL class are self-directed inquiry, knowledge building, collaboration skills, and problem solving strategies.

From 'organisms' to 'boundaries': The uneven development of theory narratives in education, learning and work connections

This paper uses the metaphor of a 'theory narrative to discuss the way in which the connections between education, learning and work have been understood. It identifies six theory narratives, and analyses each in turn, leading to an overview that suggests the way in which these explanatory frameworks might evolve in the future. The six narratives are grouped into three types. Functionalist and Marxist narratives constitute modernist, 'structuralist explanations; liberal and progressive emancipatory narratives foreground educational aims and social practice; and boundary-crossing narratives emphasize the integration of learning and work practices. The paper plots the ebb and flow of these narratives in terms of their theoretical assumptions, policy implications and the inferences made for the learner as clear distinctions between educational practices and work practices are challenged.

A synthesis of nearly 2,000 articles to help make engineers better educators While a significant body of knowledge has evolved in the field of engineering education over the years, much of the published information has been restricted to scholarly journals and has not found a broad audience. This publication rectifies that situation by reviewing the findings of nearly 2,000 scholarly articles to help engineers become better educators, devise more effective curricula, and be more effective leaders and advocates in curriculum and research development. The author's first objective is to provide an illustrative review of research and development in engineering education since 1960. His second objective is, with the examples given, to encourage the practice of classroom assessment and research, and his third objective is to promote the idea of curriculum leadership. The publication is divided into four main parts: Part I demonstrates how the underpinnings of education----history, philosophy, psychology, sociology----determine the aims and objectives of the curriculum and the curriculum's internal structure, which integrates assessment, content, teaching, and learning. Part II focuses on the curriculum itself, considering such key issues as content organization, trends, and change. A chapter on interdisciplinary and integrated study and a chapter on project and problem-based models of curriculum are included. Part III examines problem solving, creativity, and design. Part IV delves into teaching, assessment, and evaluation, beginning with a chapter on the lecture, cooperative learning, and teamwork The book ends with a brief, insightful forecast of the future of engineering education. Because this is a practical tool and reference for engineers, each chapter is self-contained and may be read independently of the others. Unlike other works in engineering education, which are generally intended for educational researchers, this publication is written not only for researchers in the field of engineering education, but also for all engineers who teach. Grasping the nettle: Integrating learning and practice revisited and re-imagined

This paper reports on findings from a practice audit and literature review into Integration of learning for Practice, conducted in Scotland between November 2003 and February 2004. Findings from the practice audit suggest that although the integration of learning is one of the key aspirations of social work education, and there are many different approaches currently in use which attempt to enhance learning integration, students, practitioners, service users and social work lecturers all agree that more needs to be done in this area. The review of literature indicates some ways in which this might be taken forward. The paper concludes that for integration of learning for practice to succeed, we need a re-imagining of the traditional boundaries between field and classroom, and practice teacher and social work academic. © 2006, The Board of Social Work Education.

How much can (or should) we push self-direction in introductory materials science?

A capacity for self-directed, life-long learning is often cited as a critical skill for tomorrow's engineers. The student response to high levels of self-directed learning, however, is not always positive, particularly in introductory level courses. Some students enthusiastically embrace the control over their learning in open-ended situations. Other students, however, become frustrated and disheartened, and ask to be returned to a comfortable state of structure, guidance, and traditional learning. The self-directed knowledge acquisition in technical disciplines has historically been a controversial approach that deserves our close examination, as some students cite self-direction as a positive contributor to learning, while others report decreases in learning due to student control. In this paper, we explore the issues surrounding student directed learning in a project-based introductory materials science course. We present preliminary data on the student responses to open-ended projects and self-guided learning, with particular emphasis on the development of and changes in attitudes and self-perceptions of learning throughout the semester. Possible causes of student responses to self-directed learning are considered, and particular attention is focused on student comfort in self-directed environments and its relation to learning processes. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

This paper explores the challenges of partnership through an examination of a high school apprenticeship program in carpentry in Ontario, Canada. Focusing on the relationships between schools, trainers, employers and government, challenges relate to the ability to coordinate the program across institutions, achieve agreement on goals, gain commitment from employers and promote a culture of learning in the workplace. These areas need to be addressed more systematically by policy-makers and partners if such programs are to foster the learning and development of young people. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

learning as Grounding and Flying: Knowledge, Skill and Transformation in Changing Work Contexts

Before activities in workplace skill development and skill transformation can be pursued, what exactly is meant by ‘skill’ requires careful examination. The notion of ‘skill’ is far from consensual or accepted unproblematically, and this article is focused on the various meanings and problems that have arisen around ‘skill’. Four conventional conceptions of skill are examined critically and rejected: that a skill exists as a discrete competency, that a skill is ‘acquired’ and is centered in the individual, that work skill (and knowledge) is learned through mental reflection on ‘concrete’ experience, and that skill development is about behavior, not politics. Towards expanding conceptions of work learning, contemporary theories applicable to changing work environments are outlined: learning as participation in situated practices, as expansion of objects and ideas, as ‘translation’ and mobilization, and as embodied emergence. Drawing insights from these four perspectives, a conception of work learning embedding a double movement of ‘flying’ and ‘grounding’ is offered. The argument is theory-driven and largely focused on work contexts subject to rapid knowledge transformation. © 2006, Sage Publications. All rights reserved.

Toward Enriched Conceptions of Work learning: Participation, Expansion, and Translation Among Individuals With/In Activity

This article argues that understandings of work learning within human resource development (HRD) theory can be fruitfully enriched by more fully incorporating practice-based perspectives. Three contemporary theories that analyze learning as a relation of individuals with and/or in activity are discussed: the participational perspective of situated cognition, the notion of expansion from cultural-historical activity theory, and the constructs of translation and mobilization presented by actor-network theory. These are not new to HRD, but this brings them together with published empirical workplace research, employing their constructs to highlight selected dynamics that may be useful tools for HRD theory development. One element in particular is read across the three theories: the dialectic of “flying” and “grounding,” or lines of discontinuity and continuity characterising work-learning. The argument is theory driven, drawing from HRD literature of work-learning and practice-based theories of social activity and knowledge production. © 2006, Sage Publications. All rights reserved.
