Curriculum across the great divide: exploring a key problem of Australian tertiary education

Article Open Access
Tertiary education in Australia is dominated by a division between two large systems of provision: vocational education and training (VET) and higher education (HE). Over time, these tertiary education sectors have become distinct in several respects, including the way curriculum is conceived and practiced. In VET, competency-based training operates as a system-wide curriculum model. In HE, different professions and disciplines, in addition to university requirements, directly influence and shape curriculum design. The Australian competency-based model has been politicised over the last few decades, leading to fetishisation of the standards used to guide learning and teaching in VET and fostering distinct approaches to curriculum in the two systems. Schwab’s notion of curriculum commonplaces can be used to examine teaching and learning in VET to highlight ways in which an expanded concept of curriculum could lead to a renewal of VET and simultaneously promote generative articulation between the two tertiary systems. © 2024 The Author(s). A Systematic Review of Research on Pedagogical Practices for Communication Skills in Engineering education

Article Open Access
The authors carried out a review study on the pedagogy for teaching communication skills (CS) in engineering higher education institutions with a view to firstly present the trend on the instructional pedagogical approaches used in an engineering classroom and secondly, to show the impact of these approaches on learners' development of CS. In order to address the research questions, we adopted 'Systematic Literature Review' as a research methodology and reviewed empirical research studies published between the year 2001 and 2021 exploring electronic database. Having followed the review protocols, we finally selected 26 research articles for a detailed analysis and synthesis. In regard with number of publications, the trends placed the USA at the top position which was followed by India. Overall, we found a lack of experimental research, subsequently a lack of evidence-based teaching practice, in the domain of pedagogy for developing CS leading to the assumption of still prevalent conventional lecture method of teaching in the CS classroom which is further held responsible for poor CS among engineering graduates. The teaching trend indicates that engineering institutions across nations are increasingly becoming aware of evidenced-based teaching approaches and are adopting innovative, learner-centered methods blended with ICT tools to facilitate the process of developing CS, along with other generic skills which has positive impact on learners' development of skills and attributes. The findings have implications for both; research and classroom teaching. © 2024, Rajarambapu Institute Of Technology. All rights reserved.

Disrupting oppressive practices in work-integrated learning

Article
This article highlights the disparities between socially advantaged students and those who identify as equity-deserving while accessing work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities. While governmental investments have aimed to broaden WIL access, persistent inequities have emphasized the need for a critical examination of oppressive systems within WIL. Using an anti-oppressive pedagogical lens, this article proposes actionable strategies to enrich WIL programs, with a particular emphasis on students facing systemic oppression. WIL educators, as key change agents, are uniquely positioned to engage in critical action that disrupts deep-rooted inequities. As further presented in the article, disrupting oppressive WIL practices may include 1) discovering one's positionality as a WIL educator; 2) exposing and addressing workplace discrimination; and 3) facilitating critical reflection in the classroom regarding students' WIL experiences. Recognizing the intersection between WIL and anti-oppressive practices offers a path toward greater access for all students, thereby fostering enhanced programs within higher education institutions. © 2024 International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning. Practicing equity, access and inclusion in work-integrated learning

Article
As work-integrated learning (WIL) expands in higher education, there is increasing attention on ensuring equitable access and inclusion for all students. These challenges are not unique to WIL, albeit WIL has some unique facets, but are pertinent to all parts of higher education and society more broadly. The WIL community recognizes that equity, diversity, and inclusion is their most significant professional development need, and with scholarship slowly on the rise, it is timely for a Special Issue dedicated to the topic within the context of WIL. This Special Issue includes 12 papers exploring equity, access, and inclusion within the context of WIL. Emergent themes include language, common barriers, disclosure, considerations for inclusive workplaces, curriculum, and assessments, as well as critical reflection, partnering with students, and resilience. It is intended that this Special Issue will continue the advancement of the journey for a more equitable society. © 2024 International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning. All rights reserved.

The Logic and Practical Path of higher education Curriculum Reform Based on Cognitive Psychology

Article Open Access
Based on cognitive psychology theory, this study explores the doctrinal logic and practical path of higher education curriculum reform to enhance the effectiveness of higher education programs, with particular attention to improving students’ psychological quality and learning effectiveness. The study uses the finite element method and digital waveguide technology to simulate and analyze the stringed musical instrument. Accurate simulation of the vibration characteristics of the musical instrument is realized through the vibration equations of an ideal string and the principles of the digital waveguide algorithm. The experimental results show that the applied simulation technique can effectively simulate the vibration characteristics of the resonance box of the musical instrument, such as the ideal string vibration and the cavity coupling effect. In addition, the study involves the mathematical expressions of forced vibration and resonance and the effects of various materials on the modal frequencies of the resonance box. The application of artificial intelligence technology in studying acoustic properties of musical instruments significantly improves the accuracy and efficiency of simulation. It provides essential theoretical support for the design and production of musical instruments. © 2023 Rui Wang and Dongjiao Huo, published by Sciendo.

Thematic, research design and theory application of business internship research: a systematic review

Review Open Access
This study provides a comprehensive review of the research design, themes, and theoretical development of internship literature in the context of business students. One hundred and ninety-two (192) articles retrieved from Scopus, Google Scholar, and the Web of Science databases and published from 1979 to 2022 were analysed. Information on bibliographic data and research design was presented using frequencies while research themes and the theoretical approach were content analysed. The findings reveal that, though business internship research is about four decades old, the knowledge domain is underdeveloped with respect to theory application, examination of relationships between antecedent, outcome, mediating and moderating variables and use of multivariate analysis. The study found previous studies were more focused on the interns’ career development, prospects, satisfaction, and employability, the benefits and role of internships, and the impact of internships on students’ academic performance. The findings highlight the vital need for a more balanced approach to business student internship research, moving beyond quantitative methodologies and towards a broader understanding through qualitative and mixed-methods investigations, ensuring sample adequacy, and exploring workplace variables. © 2024 The Author(s). Cultivating Entrepreneurial Minds: Unleashing Potential in Pakistan’s Emerging Entrepreneurs Using Structural Equational Modeling

Article
This research aims to analyze the impact of institutional elements, including students’ exposure to entrepreneurship education, faculty support for students’ development of entrepreneurial skills, and the prevalence of an entrepreneurial mindset, on undergraduate students’ propensity to engage in entrepreneurial behavior. Additionally, the study considers the entrepreneurial mindset as a moderator and institutional backing as a facilitator. The research focused on a selection of private, middle-ranking universities in Lahore, Pakistan. A web-based survey was conducted, and 384 participants were chosen for the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis. All hypotheses regarding both direct and indirect connections were confirmed by the data. Furthermore, except for one, hypotheses regarding the moderating relationship of institutional support showed significant moderation. This study provides new insights into how universities can enhance entrepreneurial culture through a comprehensive teaching and mentoring program that considers institutional support. It serves as a guide for private, middle-class institutions aiming to cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit among their business students.
