HCI researchers have explored ways to improve HCI and design education. We designed and conducted an experiential learning internship to teach principles of design research to first-year undergraduate students. We describe the framework we used for the design of the internship and the lessons we learned in a self-reflective case study. We provide the following recommendations to other educators who want to incorporate similar programs: 1) prepare for clients having differences in opinion, 2) use multiple educational methods to supplement the experience, 3) allow interns to navigate a project space on their own, but identify areas that may create major delays, and 4) prepare educational material on the latest trends and tools that may be of interest to the interns. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Making activities have been shown to offer potential for inclusive access to digital literacy amongst marginalized groups, but research exploring such approaches with older adults is still scarce. Our study introduces an electronic-card-making workshop, co-developed with Japanese older women to foster engagement aligning with their purpose, physical and cognitive skills. The workshop was initially delivered to 14 women. Following initial success, 4 participants decided to deliver a second workshop, with the support of our team, for 15 local children. We present findings from both these workshops unpacking how women's motivation for engaging in eMaking revolved around the idea of sharing, both through displaying created artefacts and the transmission of knowledge, how their learning consolidated around implicit actions and was supported by the creation of escalation strategies when they felt that demands exceeded their level of proficiency. Purpose: Framing communities of practice (CoPs) as contexts for learning and identity formation, this study examines the varied group experiences of psychoanalytic trainees. This study aims to understand what, where and how these professionals learn across their landscapes of practice. Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 psychologists enrolled in the final years of a psychotherapy graduate program, based in Rome, Italy, between September and December 2020. Findings: The study shows how professionals’ landscapes of practice emerge from a variety of group experiences – such as family, sports and friendships – which contribute to the development of professional stances, competencies and repertoires. Findings illustrate that workplace learning and individual knowledgeability are not limited to institutional or formal learning environments but instead occur dynamically across various CoPs. Workplace settings frequently act as repositories for these diverse learning experiences, emphasizing the significant role of life events in shaping professional identity and expertise. Research limitations/implications: This study has several limitations. First, it is based solely on interviews with respondents from one educational organization and a single community of practice. To broaden and deepen the understanding of both organizational and learning dynamics, future research could explore different contexts and adopt a mixed-method approach in other countries. Practical implications: The results offer practical insights into how organizations, educational settings and workplaces can benefit from valuing learning that emerges from students’ and novices’ diverse landscapes of practice. These range from “narrative opportunities” – i.e. opportunities to narrate and integrate one’s previous learning experiences into the workplace – to “reflexivity workshops” on workplace learning , which are educational experiences that allow individuals to reflect on their approach to learning (where they have acquired specific knowledge, what gaps exist in their learning ) to gain a deeper understanding of its professional application. Originality/value: Contributions come from professionals who, owing to their expertise, are particularly focused on reflecting on group learning . These insights illustrate how even the most unconventional learning experiences, often not traditionally seen as instructive, possess transformative potential as valuable learning opportunities for workplace applications. © 2025, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Several challenges have occurred in the hospitality industry caused by successive crises and geopolitical developments of recent years. To respond to these challenges, human resources must effectively acquire new practical and theoretical skills and adopt new attitudes through appropriate learning systems. This chapter investigates the characteristics of hospitality learning systems as they have been shaped by recent crises and geopolitical developments. Quantitative data, analysed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and descriptive statistics, was collected from employees in four- and five-star hotels. It was found that in tumultuous times, hotel management places great emphasis on training needs analysis as well as planning and implementation of human resource training, at the expense of evaluating the training provided. The findings, supported both scientifically and practically, highlight specific characteristics of the learning systems of four- and five-star hotels in fields like training needs analysis, training preparation and implementation, and training evaluation. © CAB International 2025. Lifelong learning within vocational education significantly influences innovation and entrepreneurship decisions. This is particularly pivotal in developing countries where bridging the gap between entrepreneurial talent demands and the supply from vocational institutions is vital. This study develops a tailored game-theoretic model to examine the interactions between government, entrepreneurs, and vocational education providers. It delves into how lifelong learning shapes entrepreneurial strategies, emphasising institutional innovations by the government and adaptability in enterprises. The model suggests that governments provide lifelong learning policies and support, entrepreneurs adjust their needs strategies in response to business developments, and vocational education institutions deliver skill enhancement programmes. The methodology encompasses analysing how lifelong learning initiatives impact entrepreneurial decisions, risk-taking behaviour, and innovative potential. The study's findings reveal that lifelong learning lowers entry barriers, augments adaptability, and fosters innovation. However, it may also lead to heightened risk aversion, slower decision-making, and overreliance on external support, potentially hindering bold innovation. To mitigate these challenges, governments should devise lifelong learning support schemes that foster innovation and risk management. This study contributes theoretical insights for possible latecomer advantages in developing countries. © 2025 The Author(s)

This study aims to analyze effect the learning model of Ethno-pedagogy Education for Sustainable Development (Ethno-ESD) to improve sustainable attitudes of students in the higher education. The Ethno-ESD approach combines aspects of Ethno- pedagogy with education for sustainable development, with an emphasis on developing social awareness and environmental responsibility. The research method used is critical analysis through case studies in several higher education institutions. Research instruments include class observation, interviews with teachers, and data collection through questionnaires for students. The collected data is analyze using triangulation to ensure the validity of the results. The results of the study were able to provide deep insight into the effectiveness of the Ethno-ESD learning model in changing student attitudes toward aspects of sustainability. The implications of this research can provide guidance for the development of more effective learning strategies in higher education contexts to encourage awareness and ongoing responsibility among students. © 2025 Malque Publishing. Virtual reality (VR) technologies have shown significant potential in enhancing the automotive design process by providing immersive, interactive, and collaborative environments for reviewing complex vehicle architectures. Traditional CAD models and physical prototypes often struggle to offer the flexibility needed for rapid iteration and spatial understanding, especially for systems such as hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. This study aims to develop a VR platform to improve the collaborative review of the internal architecture of a hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle, specifically focusing on the spatial arrangement and interaction of critical components such as hydrogen tanks, fuel cells, and batteries. The goal is to enhance design processes, reduce iteration costs, and improve spatial understanding and decision-making within automotive teams. The VR environment was built using Unity 3D and optimized for mobile VR platforms, incorporating features such as interactive component manipulation, dual locomotion modes (teleportation and free movement), and real-time collaboration. The platform was tested with a range of users, including automotive professionals and students, to evaluate its usability, performance, and impact on spatial understanding and user engagement. User feedback demonstrated high levels of satisfaction, with 85% of participants reporting improved spatial understanding, 80% preferring VR over traditional CAD tools, and 90% noting increased engagement. The VR platform enabled faster completion of assembly tasks (40% faster than traditional methods) and improved collaborative decision-making. However, challenges such as system performance issues, motion sickness, and a steep learning curve were reported by some users, particularly nontechnical users. The VR platform developed in this study significantly advanced the collaborative and immersive review of automotive designs, offering tangible benefits in terms of engagement, spatial comprehension, and design iteration efficiency. While there were limitations related to hardware requirements and user accessibility, the results highlight the transformative potential of VR in automotive design and education. Future work will focus on performance optimization, AR integration, and improving usability for nontechnical users. © 2025 The Author(s). The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted and reshaped undergraduate students’ social, learning , and workplace environments. Using an ecological systems framework, we draw on survey data from a sequential, mixed-methods study of undergraduate students at an urban, Minority-Serving Institution (n = 1,272) to examine the association between health, economic, and other pandemic-related shocks and students’ academic perceptions. First, we conducted exploratory factor analyses on two groups of measures: “basic need concerns” and “interference with academic performance and plans.” Second, we connected student perceptions of the pandemic's interference with their academic performance and plans to ecological changes using regression analysis. Our model found a significant amount of the variance (12.6%) could be attributed to economic and health-related shocks and academic disruptions, including changes to caretaker responsibilities. However, students’ perceptions of how well they were doing with online learning accounted for most of the modeled variance. Implications for undergraduate student retention are discussed. © The Author(s) 2023.

Aim(s): To explore barriers, facilitators, and practical implications of educating a nurse practitioner in hospital at home setting from the perspective of the nurse practitioner in training, healthcare professionals, educators, and managers. Background: Hospital at home care is considered promising to deal with current healthcare challenges. Nurse practitioners can have a pivotal role in delivering hospital at home care. Currently there is limited knowledge on education of nurse practitioners in this setting. Design: A generic qualitative study. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the nurse practitioner in training, educators, healthcare professionals, and managers working at the hospital or community care organization. The interviews focused on experiences, barriers, and facilitators related to learning and working in the hospital at home setting. Data were coded and thematised. Results: The following six themes emerged: 1) Provide care aligned with the patient's journey; 2) Articulating a clear vision on training in the hospital at home setting; 3) Integrated learning and working requires a wide range of competencies; 4) Integrated learning requires a coherent and motivated team; 5) Practical obstacles require a pragmatic approach; and 6) Clarity on the positioning of nurse practitioners is essential. Conclusions: The findings show that an educational trajectory for a nurse practitioner in a hospital at home setting can be successfully established. Various factors were identified that need to be considered in the development and executing of such learning trajectory. Organizations are recommended to take shared responsibility for these learning trajectories. Reporting method: EQUATOR guidelines. Purpose: Competency-based human resource management (CBHRM) is a key component of all organisations but needs to be regularly reviewed and evaluated to ensure the quality of healthcare professionals. One common taxonomy of competency domains for health professions is from Englander et al., where this paper aims to conduct a large-scale analysis based on topic modelling to investigate the extent to which the competency framework for the healthcare sector is applied in the German job market of health professions. Design/methodology/approach: The quantitative NLP analysis of a dataset consisting of 3,362 online job advertisements of nurses and doctors was scraped from a German job portal. The data was pre-processed according to Miner et al. For the analysis, the authors applied unsupervised (e.g. HDP, LDA) and supervised (BERTopic) methods and content analysis. Based on the extracted topics a word list was created and these words were coded to existing dimensions of the competency framework of Englander et al. or new dimensions were created. Findings: Comparing methodologies, HDP (unsupervised) and BERTopic (supervised) were the best performing while the BERTopic algorithm outperforms HDP. For the doctor dataset 46% of one main dimension was identified but with an overall coverage of 69%, for the care dataset is weaker with 30.8% but an overall coverage of 100%. Additionally, the taxonomy was enhanced with supplementary competencies of “personality/characteristics” and “leadership” as well as two facets of job description which are “place of work” and “job conditions”. Originality/value: On the one hand selected dimensions of the taxonomy could be clearly identified but on the other hand, there is a documented gap between the taxonomy and the competencies advertised. One cause may lie in the NLP algorithms but applicants may also have the same difficulties when reading the OJAs. Thus, practitioners should carefully review OJAs regarding better separating explicit competencies they are searching for. For the scientific development of new competency frameworks, our data-driven approach exemplified an extension of a given taxonomy. © 2024, Emerald Publishing Limited.
