Building interdisciplinary collaboration skills through a digital building project

The purpose of this paper is to delineate core features of successful cross-disciplinary collaboration, and to consider how to bring these features into engineering education so that engineering students are better equipped for future interdisciplinary work. Despite a consistent interest in interdisciplinarity in education in the last decades, there are still conceptual inconsistencies and confusion surrounding the term. It is the integrative aspect, which is at the heart of interdisciplinarity, denoting the synergetic interaction between specific disciplinary perspectives. However, current university structures inhibit the integration of multiple disciplinary perspectives into a more comprehensive approach to problem solving. Meanwhile, the industry is increasingly in demand of graduates with strong interdisciplinary skills. The present paper is guided by the following research question: What are the implications of interdisciplinarity for engineering education, and how would an enhanced interdisciplinary thinking influence curriculum planning? The present study points at the development of cross-disciplinary collaboration skills in real-life settings as instrumental to building interdisciplinary competence. The various forms of problem and project based learning practices employed in many engineering educational settings may include an interdisciplinary dimension, which is though often challenged by current university structures and traditional disciplinary boundaries. Consequently, collaboration is limited to working in homogeneous groups on mutually agreed projects, with little scope for developing crossdisciplinary collaborative skills, i.e. the ability to negotiate conflicts, integrate expertise from related fields, and produce flexible, innovative solutions - all of which qualify students to work in the type of independent, interdisciplinary project teams, increasingly in demand by industry. Our aim is to raise awareness of this gap and suggest a framework for integrating interdisciplinary collaboration competencies into existing problem and project based learning curricula. The data in this paper originates from the setting of an annually recurring, three-day-long digital building workshop, "Digital Days" (henceforth DD), that brings together industry specialists, university and vocational training staff, as well as exponents of the entire range of professionals populating a building site. students and trainees engage collaboratively on a common digitalized design platform, the Building Information Modeling (BIM) method. BIM design tools allow for extracting different though automatically consistent views from a building model for various uses enhancing the integration of the design process. Being the meeting point, building models facilitate the coordination and collaboration between parties. BIM alters the cross-disciplinary approach used in the industry today, since it is only possible if the processes are iterative, and disciplinary contributions are continuously being merged into the project. BIM both requires and supports interdisciplinary collaboration and it is therefore suggested as a means to include interdisciplinarity in engineering programs. One of the salient features in our findings was the aspect of collaboration between participants from the various disciplines, who not only benefited from working in a team, but also from the process of negotiating solutions with concurrent teams. Participants mobilized communicative skills in order to uncover each other's "ways of thinking and practicing" and the underlying principles of specific disciplinary methods in order to distill the problem solving approach. Moreover, the students gained more confidence in approaching problems. The experimental learning climate boosted participants' spirit of inquiry and freedom to advance viable solutions to the open-ended problem. The dynamic social milieu promoted mutual commitment and motivation to comply with the constraints of a product oriented approach, where interdisciplinary collaboration was instrumental to project work. Regarding the interdisciplinary objective in problem and project-based learning models employed in engineering education, our findings suggest that there may be further scope for interdisciplinary collaboration, at both intra-departmental and faculty level, and the wider social context including the industry. Socially facilitated learning environments created by real-life problem scenarios and the coexistence of diverse disciplinary perspectives are seen as main qualifiers for students engaging actively in interdisciplinary project teams. In order to promote the development of interdisciplinary collaboration skills among engineering students, the interdisciplinary competence has to be explicitly acknowledged as a learning goal in the educational program. Besides the formal, curriculum level, a framework for integrating the development of interdisciplinary competence in engineering education should involve the organizational and instructional levels, i.e. explicit ways of organizing interdisciplinary learning opportunities, as well as the competence development level, i.e. equipping staff with the required insight and tools to facilitate students' learning processes.

Social stratification: Trends and processes

Research into social stratification and social divisions has always been a central component of sociological study. This volume brings together a range of thematically organised case-studies comprising empirical and methodological analyses addressing the challenges of studying trends and processes in social stratification. This collection has four themes. The first concerns the measurement of social stratification, since the problem of relating concepts, measurements and operationalizations continues to cause difficulties for sociological analysis. This book clarifies the appropriate deployment of existing measurement options, and presents new empirical strategies of measurement and interpretation. The conception of the life course and individual social biography is very popular in modern sociology. The second theme of this volume exploits the contemporary expansion of micro-level longitudinal data and the analytical approaches available to researchers to exploit such records. It comprises chapters which exemplify innovative empirical analysis of life-course processes in a longitudinal context, thus offering an advance on previous sociological accounts concerned with longitudinal trends and processes. The third theme of the book concerns the interrelationship between contemporary demographic, institutional and socioeconomic transformations and structures of social inequality. Although the role of wider social changes is rarely neglected in sociological reviews, such changes continue to raise analytical challenges for any assessment of empirical differences and trends. The fourth theme of the book discusses selected features of policy and political responses to social stratification. Enculturation into engineering professional practice: Using legitimate peripheral participation to develop communication skills in engineering students

The importance of communication skills for engineering professionals is widely acknowledged. Research in the authors' group indicates that along with other cognitive and behavioral skills, employers of new engineering graduates place high value on communication skills. Here, the authors argue that becoming a professional engineer means entering in to a particular community of practice, one that communicates in a way that is specific to that community of practice. Engineers employ, consciously or sub-consciously, a variety of Vygotskyian psychological tools, and becoming an engineer necessitates new graduates understanding the nature and use of such tools within that community. Recent research in the authors' group suggests students that engage in experiential learning as part of a work-integrated learning program in engineering are rapidly enculturated into the community of practice that forms the engineering community. This, it appears, occurs by means of legitimate peripheral participation in the community as these 'newcomers' work alongside practicing engineers in a form of cognitive apprenticeship. In doing so they gradually adopt mores of communication, eventually becoming legitimate, fully-participating members of the engineering community, and they developed a sense of belonging that is not easily achieved in conventional programs of study in higher education. © 2012, IGI Global.

Implementing a dual system of education to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics

There is a growing concern in the United States regarding the declining state of education and college enrollment for degrees in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). As part of a STEM Outreach program, The MITRE Corporation is partnering with educational foundation organizations to encourage school districts to seek out and take advantage of new prospects for students. These include opportunities to learn and apply STEM-related constructs and emerging technologies in a contextually relevant setting. This paper presents a model for integrating classroom and on the job activities to enhance the overall educational experience. A case study is presented highlighting MITRE's STEM program, including: increasing awareness of STEM education and career initiatives, building and maintaining partnerships with Colleges, High School STEM programs and other Community Educational Organizations, and providing internship opportunities. Tribes and territories in the 21st century: Rethinking the significance of disciplines in higher education

The 'tribes and territories' metaphor for the cultures of academic disciplines and their roots in different knowledge characteristics has been used by those interested in university life and work since the early 1990s. This book draws together research, data and theory to show how higher education has gone through major change since then and how social theory has evolved in parallel. Together these changes mean there is a need to re-theorise academic life in a way which reflects changed contexts in universities in the twenty-first century, and so a need for new metaphors.Using a social practice approach, the editors and contributors argue that disciplines are alive and well, but that in a turbulent environment where many other forces conditioning academic practices exist, their influence is generally weaker than before. Female students' experiences with project-based work in introductory engineering classes at two- and four-year institutions

This study explores women's experiences with project-based learning within the context of introductory engineering courses at two community colleges and one four-year institution. The study was framed by Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological systems theory [Bronfenbrenner, U., The Ecology of Human Development: Experiments by Nature and Design, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1979]. Findings were based on analyses of data gathered through multiple qualitative methods: observations; individual interviews with female students; focus group interviews with project teams; and document collection. This study's findings showed that participants' project teams were a critically important microsystem within participants' ecological environments. Within this sometimes "chilly" microsystem, female students negotiated intrateam processes, which were in some cases affected by gender norms. Intrateam processes that influenced female students' project-based learning experiences included interpersonal dynamics; leadership; and division of labor. Study findings point toward ways that engineering educators might attend to the intrateam processes identified, and better accommodate the needs of all students in project-based introductory courses. © 2012 by Begell House, Inc.

Exploring composition studies: Sites, issues, and perspectives
