Employers' Perspectives on Skills Falling Short, HEIs' education System, and Graduates' Attributes

The objective of this study is to establish the relevance of employability skills that engineers lack, the educational system of higher education institutions, and the key characteristics of graduates from the perspective of Malaysian employers. There is an absence of information on the particular abilities needed by engineers in the workplace, the calibre of the nation's educational system, and the characteristics of graduates that make them employable. This study used a quantitative technique, with 140 questionnaires delivered to top managers at the organizational level at a Penang, Malaysia-based firm. The survey data was extracted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 29. Findings indicated employers agreed that engineers must be able to use and keep up with emerging technologies in engineering practice. The results suggest that higher education Institutions (HEIs) should update, improve, and deliver the skills with latest industry requirements to make fresh graduates more work-ready. Findings also revealed the important graduates' attributes to the industry are the ability to balance knowledge, skills, personality, and attitudes. It is suggested that this data analysis would be an important reference for engineers HEIs, and graduates to prepare themselves and take shared responsibility, especially in this challenging economic situation. © 2024 IEEE.

Modern approach to computer modeling of functional 3d objects in the professional training of future engineers and vocational education teachers

This article examines the features of computer modeling of functional 3D objects using the SolidWorks software suite, which is an integral component in the training of future engineers and vocational education teachers. The SolidWorks software suite provides tools not only for creating three-dimensional models but also for analyzing the mechanical properties of parts and visualizing the technical condition of objects. This enables future engineers and vocational education teachers to better understand the principles of designing and analyzing complex part structures. A step-by-step algorithm for computer modeling has been developed, from creating a basic sketch to completing a three-dimensional model of a functional object. It has been established that the computer modeling process allows for the selection of appropriate tools and commands for creating geometric transformations of objects and setting parameters. This ensures high accuracy in constructing a computer model according to its geometric parameters. It has been established that the modern approach to computer modeling in the educational process demonstrates the implementation of innovative technological solutions to improve the quality of training in higher education institutions. It has been determined that the proposed approach will not only help future engineers and vocational education teachers develop practical skills but also contribute to a deeper understanding of engineering concepts. © 2024 by the authors; licensee Learning Gate.

Enhancing Undergraduate Employability and Career Adaptability through Career Planning education: The Mediating Role of Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy

Background and Aim: Career decision-making self-efficacy serves as a mediating factor in the association between career planning education and the employability and career adaptability of undergraduate students enrolled in universities in China. Methods: Employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, this study incorporates a survey of 500 students from various disciplines alongside in-depth, one-to-one interviews with 20 students. Analysis of the quantitative data suggests that career planning education enhances students’ self-efficacy in career decision-making, thereby improving their employability and adaptability to the workforce. These findings are further supported by qualitative data, as post hoc interviews indicate that students’ self-efficacy is positively influenced by practical and experiential components of career planning education, such as internships and workshops, which prepare them for the dynamic nature of the labour market. Results: The research findings highlight challenges such as the limited availability of comprehensive career guidance resources and the misalignment between educational content and vocational requirements, both of which can impede the effectiveness of career development initiatives. These results indicate the necessity of integrating practical experiences and robust support systems into career planning education within academic institutions. Additionally, they underscore the need for academic programmes to be more closely aligned with labour market demands. Conclusion: The study presents valuable implications for educators, policymakers, and career advisors committed to equipping undergraduate students for successful career pathways. © 2024 Ani Publishing Ltd. The Impact of Design Competitions on the Skill Development and Employability of Chinese Graphic Design Students

Objectives: This study examines the role of design competitions, analysing their impact on the employability of graphic design students in China and evaluating the critical importance of subject-specific contests as an alternative educational approach. Additionally, it traces the origins and evolution of graphic design, highlighting the profound influence of the Bauhaus movement, founded in the early twentieth century, on contemporary graphic design practices. Methodology: Graphic design education underwent significant transformations following the emergence of the socialist market economy, which, driven by China's rapid economic growth and social changes, diverged from traditional educational models. Design competitions not only refine participants' professional competencies but also play a crucial role in shaping design education in China. Through the application of human capital theory, this study illustrates that design contests are essential in fostering educational innovation and improving teaching quality, thereby becoming an integral component of higher education. Results: Through these competitions, students enhance their practical skills, foster innovation and teamwork, and acquire valuable experience that facilitates their entry into the job market. Additionally, companies benefit from access to a pool of promising candidates, enabling them to identify and train potential employees at reduced costs. The present study employed quantitative research methods, utilising a questionnaire for data collection. However, certain limitations must be acknowledged, including a small sample size and the need for further refinement of research methodologies, both of which may restrict the generalisability and reliability of the findings. Nevertheless, existing literature indicates that participation in design competitions enhances student skills, facilitates the development of high-quality portfolios, boosts self-confidence, improves job-seeking prospects, and contributes positively to both personal and professional growth. Future research should expand the sample size and refine methodological approaches to produce more generalisable conclusions. Ultimately, design competitions serve as an underutilised platform for developing student capabilities while also offering valuable insights into the priorities universities should consider in advancing educational reform—an essential factor in fostering innovative talent development. © 2024 Ani Publishing Ltd. Financial and economic approaches to pedagogical monitoring in higher education: Quality assurance through green economy principles

The purpose of this study was to cover the financial and economic approaches to monitoring for the green economy integration in the educational process. The study analysed the financial and economic aspects of pedagogical monitoring and their role in the implementation of green economy in higher education. The relationship between sustainable development and green economy was covered and the impact of green economy on the educational process was examined. The study defined the financial and economic methods of monitoring: cost and profitability analysis, resource optimisation, benchmarking, budgeting, calculation of key performance indicators, modelling. The study explored the degree of implementation of green economy principles in the educational process of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. To assess the real practices in higher education institutions, the opinion of teachers and students at the Kyrgyz State University named after Ishenaly Arabaev, Almaty Humanitarian-Economic University, Tashkent State Economic University was analysed. The findings showed that the universities under study actively implement environmental projects and initiatives related to sustainable development and green economy. Furthermore, the principles of green economy are integrated into educational programmes. However, the effectiveness of monitoring the educational process was low. Financial and economic barriers in monitoring and implementation of green economy in the educational process were also found, namely: lack of material and technical support (45%), limited opportunities to use innovative technologies (35%), low motivation of students to implement the principles of green economy (32%). There are also barriers in the practical training of future specialists to implement the green economy principles. For more effective practical training of students and to improve the effectiveness of green economy, it was proposed to introduce into the educational process the cooperation with educational institutions and public organisations, project-based learning, to organise trainings and courses, as well as to leverage information and communication technologies. A monitoring model was proposed based on financial and economic approaches, which includes the stages of planning, diagnostics, and the stage of strategy development, which can influence the objectivity of evaluation of the educational process through the lens of green economy. © The Author(s).

Micro-credentials in higher and vocational education: An innovation or a disruption? A review of the literature

This article examines the literature on micro-credentials within the context of higher education and vocational education. It considers whether they are an innovative force for good or a disruptive force for evil. Are they, as the literature suggests, a means of creating agency, affording equity, access, and participation in higher and vocational education for those who otherwise lacked the time, money, opportunity, or confidence to apply for further study or/and felt disenfranchised from the learning experience, or/and found the whole concept of a qualification daunting? Are they, as posited in the literature, an excellent conduit to higher and vocational education for those wishing to sample an academic or vocational subject without committing to a full degree course? Or are they, as pre-supposed in other literature, an over-simplistic alternative to the traditional academic credential, a cynical attempt to dumb down knowledge, turning higher and vocational education into a series of stackable credentials aimed at satisfying the job market, and the neoliberal thirst for more and more dollars to fund our institutions, but failing to meet the finer subtleties of the academic experience? I examine and critique the literature around this debate and argue how we might harness micro-credentials to sustain innovation and disruption positively, leveraging them to move forward within education in general and higher and vocational education in particular. © 2024. Practical electronic maintenance and repair technique to support sustainability development

Electronic Maintenance and Repair is fundamentally a combination of theoretical and practical learning to support higher education in the vocational or polytechnic specialization. This material is outlined in a course by conducting experiments with existing problems with objects that are students in practicum classes. In this practice, it is explained about the specifications, damage, ways of measuring and diagnosing damage based on the Project Based Learning (PBL) method. All Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) are explained in Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Job Safety Operation (JSO) followed by different circuits and work steps for each electronic circuit. In actual fact, after this method is applied, students can determine and make specifications for an electronic equipment/system, understand and also complete calculations about reliability and failure in electronic systems. One more thing is to recognize damage and how to measure electronic components both passive and active. It is also explaining work principles and looking for damage to a simple digital and analog electronic circuit. In the process, this method experiments with various circuits by measuring normal conditions and damage according to the given switch. The entire measurement method is performed through the specified testing point thereby analysis can be implemented based on the comparison of measurement results under normal conditions and damage. Based on the results of data and analysis of student response results aspects of PBL can be applied to tackle and solve the problems diagnosed by damaged conditions of the circuits.
