The European Universities Initiative (EUI), created by the European Commission in 2017, is a recent novel phenomenon within the European Union policy toolkit that explicitly targets the development of transnational cooperation in higher education (HE). To date, the EUI counts 44 European university alliances, involving around 340 HE institutions. In this paper, we argue that the EUI can be seen as a case of a transnational institution building process representing a potentially significant structural reform for European higher education . Anchored in new institutionalism, we explore the regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive dimensions of the EUI. Methodologically, this study analyzes the perspectives of European policy actors (n = 4), a set of policy documents (n = 13) and the mission statements of the EUI’s partnerships funded before 2022 (n = 41). The results show that the EUI emerges as the ‘next level of cooperation’ in European HE since it aims to transform European cooperation (regulative dimension), to create and diffuse a new model for European HE following a challenge-based approach (normative dimension), and to work as a way to reinforce and institutionalize European and global scripts for European HE (cultural-cognitive dimension). © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V. 2023.

Despite research confirming the positive impact of flipped jigsaw learning across multiple disciplines, little attention has been paid to embedding formative assessment into flipped jigsaw learning to optimize the acquisition of practical skills needed for future professional careers and promote learning engagement and higher -order thinking skills (HOTS). This study aimed to investigate the incorporation of formative assessment into a flipped jigsaw learning context and examine its effects on learning engagement and HOTS in an undergraduate business marketing course. A quasi-experimental design was used in this study, with two groups: control with flipped jigsaw learning and traditional summative assessment and experimental with flipped jigsaw learning and formative assessment. Each group consisted of 25 students, all enrolled in the undergraduate business administration department at an Indonesian vocational tertiary education institution. Questionnaires and student assignment scores were used to collect data. According to the findings, flipped jigsaw learning with extended formative assessment improved learning engagement and HOTS more than flipped jigsaw learning with traditional summative assessment. This study's findings may contribute to advancing theories and practices on how formative assessment has recently been explored as a learning tool embedded in flipped jigsaw learning in international business education . © 2024

We identify the causal effects of three types of internships (mandatory intra-curricular, voluntary intra-curricular, and voluntary extra-curricular) among university graduates on job interview and hiring chances, and explore the mechanisms underlying these effects. To this end, we perform a vignette experiment among HR professionals in Belgium. Our results indicate that internships improve one’s job interview and hiring chances, with voluntary extra-curricular internships having the strongest effect. With respect to the mechanisms, we find that internships improve employers’ perceptions about the job seekers’ skills acquired during the educational career, their pre-existing abilities and motivations, and their knowledge of the job content and working conditions. The first two types of perceptions are also found to be strong predictors of the hiring outcomes. The effects of internships on hiring chances are not found to be reduced or reinforced by the presence of other work experiences (student work, volunteering). © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Unemployment is a significant issue in many countries, including Indonesia. This study aims to assess the impact of independent variables on the dependent variable. The dependent variable is the unemployment rate in vocational higher education (Y), and the independent variables are the employment opportunities in vocational higher education (X1), government policy in the establishment of the Directorate General of Vocational education (X2), and area differences between Java and outside Java (X3). Multiple linear regression with the Ordinary Least Squares method is used in the analysis. The findings indicate that the three independent variables have a statistically significant effect on the dependent variable. Variable X1 significantly affects the unemployment rate in vocational higher education in Indonesia, while variables X2 and X3 have a significant adverse effect. According to the findings of this study, there needs to be more labor in vocational higher education in Indonesia. The novelty of this research is to demonstrate the effect of establishing the Directorate General of Vocational education in 2020, which is then updated based on the work procedure organization in 2021 to reduce the unemployment rate in Indonesian vocational higher education . © 2024 International Academic Press

Our study investigated the effects of combining project-based learning (PBL) and flipped classroom (FC) methods in university education on the learning motivation and learning outcomes of students at the bachelor (BSc), master (MSc), and higher vocational education and training (HVET) levels. We aimed to explore how these modern teaching methods can influence students’ performance and motivation at different levels of education . The research used cross-sectional analysis and quantitative methods to evaluate the impact of FC and combined PBL and FC methods. This study followed groups of students for two academic years, comparing their results with control groups that did not benefit from the combined teaching method but were studied in a same FC environment. The results showed that students at the BSc and HVET levels significantly improved their learning motivation and achievement by combining PBL and FC methods (BSc: p = 0.0001248, HVET: p = 0.0485), while at the MSc level, this effect was not significant (p = 0.1000). These data support that an effective combination of PBL and FC methods can improve learning motivation and outcomes at certain levels of education , but further research is needed better to understand the effects for students at the MSc level. © 2024 by the author.

The current study explored the information and communication technology and higher -order thinking skills necessary for accounting students in Ghana upon completion of their accounting programme. These skills will improve their job prospects. The study adopted a qualitative approach involving in-depth semi-structured face-to-face interviews with government officials, accounting academics, employers and accounting graduates. The quadruple helix (QH) model of innovation was applied to examine the required information and communication technology and higher -order thinking skills and roles of the key QH stakeholders in promoting the development of these skills. Purposive and snowball sampling methods were utilised to select the participants for this study. The data were then analysed using thematic review procedures with the assistance of ATLAS.ti™ 9. The study revealed a growing need for accounting graduates to demonstrate creativity, analytical skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, and strong interpersonal skills for swift adaptation and success in the competitive professional landscape. Enhancing the employability of accounting graduates demands collaboration among government, academics, employers, and graduates, particularly by developing the curriculum and enhancing practical work-readiness. © Authors.

Introduction. The process of professional development of the country is influenced by global processes: digitalization, progressive science and institutional education , the emergence of new interdisciplinary scientific fields, the development of new factors of social mobility, the emergence of new professions, etc. This influence can be taken into account in the discrepancy between the desired labor and educational career paths with the fact that university graduates use life guidelines based on the level of dissatisfaction with their acquired profession and career. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the distinctive features of the formation of career trajectories of university graduates who received education in the natural sciences and humanities. Materials and methods. To achieve this goal, an online questionnaire was conducted, in which 252 graduates of different years from 32 Russian universities of natural sciences and humanities took part. To process the data, sequential analysis of t-Student criteria (p = 0.05), factor analysis, and content analysis were used. Results. Special features of the formation of career trajectories have been identified: the assessment of the demand for knowledge and skills in the labor market among graduates of natural science faculties after a bachelor's degree is higher than among graduates of humanities (7.17 compared to 5.75); More often than not, graduates of natural science faculties (71.6 compared to 43.1) plan to work/continue to work in the specialty acquired as a bachelor’s degree; 67.9% of graduates of natural science faculties have a longer planning horizon (several years) (compared to 43.1). from 32.1%); 26% of “techies” continue their work dynasty (compared with 6%); %); significant values for graduates of humanities are “harmony of personal life and career” (4.49 on average 4.01), “social recognition” (3.42 on average 2.95) and “emotional health” (4.52 on average 4.11), while for “techies” the opportunity to realize their entrepreneurial abilities is more significant (3.2 on average 2.75). “Humanitarians” compared to “technical specialists” are potentially more ready for sabbatical (3.46 on average 2.78), downshifting (2.65 on average 2.18) and relocation (3.40 on average 2.73). Four types of career trajectories were identified among graduates of humanities faculties (using the rotation method – Varimax): balanced multipotential, stagnant uncertain, innovative and altruistic escapism. For graduates of natural sciences, such differentiation is not defined. Conclusion. The data obtained allow us to conclude that graduates of natural science faculties have more employment opportunities due to the compliance of university training with the requirements of employers. For graduates of humanities faculties, the career trajectory is more variable, unstable, has a fluctuating nature and is associated primarily with horizontal mobility, while for graduates of natural science faculties the career trajectory is less variable and has a greater tendency toward upward mobility. © 2024 LLC Ecological Help. The problem and the aim of the study. The mPBLFC model combines elements of problem-based learning (PBL) and the flipped classroom, incorporating the use of mobile devices. Problems arise in developing the mPBLFC model, including the combination of PBL steps into a flipped classroom and the integration of mobile technology. This research aims to provide relevant references to serve as a guide for developing the mPBLFC model, specifically designed for mathematics learning. The objective of this study is to scrutinize the attributes of the mPBLFC learning model through a comprehensive literature review. Research methods. This research, conducted through a comprehensive literature review using the PRISMA method, investigates 46 selected articles that have passed through identification (1,000 papers), screening (247 papers), eligibility (90 papers), and inclusion stages (46 papers). These 46 articles provide a general description of the year of publication, research geography, research object, research subject, and the developed model. After obtaining a general overview of the articles, a more in-depth review is conducted regarding the various components of the learning models they have developed. Subsequently, the mPBLFC model is synthesized and can be implemented in mathematics learning. Results. An overview of articles reviewed from 2017-2023 based on geography reveals the following distribution: Southeast Asia (37.14% of the reviewed articles), East Asia (25.71%), the United States (2.86%), West Asia (11.43%), Australia (5.71%), and Europe (5.71%). The distribution of articles based on research objects indicates a focus on mathematics (26%), science (17%), social (7%), and other (50%). Furthermore, articles are distributed based on research subjects across elementary school/SD (6%), middle school/SMP (15%), high school (SMA)/vocational school (SMK) (33%), and higher education /PT (46%).The mPBLFC model is an innovative blend of mobile PBL techniques, incorporating learning activities both before, during, and after classes, all facilitated through mobile devices. The integral components of the learning model encompass (a) learning syntax, (b) support systems, (c) social systems, (d) the reaction principle, and (e) learning effects. Conclusion. These characteristics encompass (a) a targeted focus on mathematics education with the aim of enhancing high school students' critical, computational, and creative thinking skills; (b) a structured approach involving preclass, in-class, and out-of-class learning activities; (c) a fundamental principle emphasizing students' ability to gather, share, and explore various problem-solving strategies while comprehending the steps to solve problems; (d) preclass activities that encompass problem orientation, understanding key concepts, and exploring a variety of problem-solving resources, allowing students to engage independently with diverse learning materials; (e) classroom activities that include discussions, experiments, problem-solving sessions, collaborative information sharing, and presentations, with the teacher transitioning from facilitator and mentor preclass to guide and support students' activities in class; and (f) a positive impact on students, fostering their drive to seek, share, and apply various information while enhancing their problem-solving skills. © 2024 LLC Ecological Help. (2024)
Purpose: The article aims to identify the determinants of the urbanization process given the magnitude of this phenomenon and also its economic, social and environmental implications and pressure on public authorities to find viable solutions in the context of sustainable development. Design/methodology/approach: The research is based on regression analysis with urbanization growth being the dependent variable and enrollment in higher education , GDP, value added by industry and female labor force as independent variables. Findings: The main factors that favor urbanization are the increase in population, industry value-added and the female labor force. Urbanization is an objective that must be pursued differently by public authorities in developed and developing countries, given the different realities they face-population growth in developing countries, and population aging and international migration in developed countries. Research limitations/implications: The present research has limitations generated by the selection of independent variables, which is why in future directions, the research will consider the use of other indicators such as the number of graduates, exports as percent of GDP or migrations as a percentage of the total population. Given the complexity of the phenomenon of urbanization, future research will focus on groups of countries as they resulted from the clustering made by this article. Practical implications: The impact of higher education on urbanization is low, which is why the intensification of partnerships between municipal authorities and universities could be a solution that ensures not only the transfer of knowledge from academia to the public sector but also from entrepreneurs increasingly aware of the importance of promoting SDGs for urban development in the context of the challenges posed by global warming. The involvement of women in the labor market is essential for the intensification of the urbanization process. The increasing presence of women in the labor market generates an increase in the income of families, an increase in the level of education and an intensification of national and international migration. The research findings can be used by policy and decision-makers to develop appropriate urbanization and education policies and strategies. Originality/value: The existence of inhomogeneous clusters is noticeable, which demonstrates the complexity of the urbanization phenomenon that is present in all countries around the world, but under the influence of different factors such as the export of natural resources (mainly oil) or the intensification of industrial activity. Taking into account the variables used, this study stands out in the multitude of articles published in the international mainstream. © 2023, Emerald Publishing Limited.
